New to rennlist, 1st post
I just bought a 1989 944 Turbo and need some help figuring out what I have.
But 1st let me introduce myself...while this is my 1st post on rennlist, I have been on the Corvette forum since 2001, so I'm not a forum rookie, just new here.
I bought a Vette in 2001 and in 06' got a C6 Z06, so I have been away from Porsche's for a bit but I also got a 75' 914 a few years ago and I'm currently doing a rotisserie restoration on it. I've since been reconnecting with my 914 experience and knowledge.
I say I've been away for a bit b/c I've owned a 914 since 1977, the 75' is my 7th. I've also owned three 928's and the 944 my dad bought new in April of 1983, so the 88' Turbo is my 12th Porsche...all used.
I've been a PCA member for almost 20 years (wish I had joined when I bought that 914 in 77')
So I get the forum thing, understand what Porsche means, I can pull the engine out of a 914 in 45 minutes, I can replace a clutch in the Vette, but other than that I don't know jack and need your help.
As far as the user name I had to create to join up...I was born in Detroit.
So here is my 1st question: what have I got in this 88' T that I just bought?
here's what I know: I got it from a Porsche dealer that didn't want to take it to the auction (I know someone at the dealership). The clock is showing 75k miles but the odo does not work. Carfax shows it probably broke two years ago. The 25 year old car probably wasn't driven much in the last 2 years. It was owned by an elderly medical scientist who was in poor health when he parted with the car. Car is in good condition.
Here is the main piece of history/service record that I got with it: a $25,600 bill for engine work that included new heads, 42 lbs fuel injectors, Carrillo race rod-S, 3.0 Porsche crank-S, Piston set-S, Garrett turbo charger-S, air flow meter w/chip-S, along with a stage 3 clutch kit-S, and misc. items like hoses, filters, fuel lines, OP sender, expansion tank. (btw: I thought the "S" behind the parts meant it was a turbo S part but now looking at the parts list everything has a -S or a -N behind it.
This ticket also had "check engine light" and a tow fee. Looks like it ate a timing belt?
Any help evaluating this would be helpful.
thanks,
Gary

Welcome!
I bought my first (and last...) Corvette in late 2000 (a then-new 2001 Z06). I was on CF for a while. There are a couple former and current Vette owners here, you're in good company.
As Shawn suggested, posting the receipt might help provide some clues. There are all kinds of odd combinations of parts you can put together for these motors so seeing the receipt might be helpful.
Oh, and it's "head" not "heads"
As for the "S" part - no, the P/N will not end in "S". The Turbo S had a slightly larger turbo, bigger brakes (off a 928), and a bunch of extra chassis stiffening. As for why your parts list has -S after it, I have no idea. And while the engine bay is a little cramped, these cars are pretty easy to work on. A good site that is a really good 944 primer is Clark's Garage - www.clarks-garage.com Lots of basic info along with a lot of DIY tips. It's my "home page" on the computer I have in my garage, I refer to it often. (Rennlist is my 2nd "home page"...)

And yes I stand corrected on the Head not heads.
