Nope. too loose. .004" on a 944 is even past factory wear specs.

I know you are, but what am I?

Seriously, this sounds like a great modification and one I'd consider doing in a heartbeat. May still consider it if we ever finish the 16v motor. The other option is a custom crank which would allow for a much lighter version and some different bearings. A bit more Spendy though.

Default Coated Rod Bearings

Yes, we can do coated bearings. We'd have to send them to PolyDyne or Calico and the cost would be +$8/pr. plus the additional shipping. I'm not convinced they're worth the trouble, though. They take up some oil clearance, which we could compensate for, but if you have any sort of significant oiling problem, the coating won't save your bacon. Also, down the road if you want to throw in a non-coated bearing, you'll have additional oil clearance.

BTW, the bearings are available .25mm oversize, if needed, at no additional charge.

So with these mods would you see an immediate increase in oil pressure when hot or cold?

I'm going to bump this because I believe it's a huge improvement in 944 rod bearing (and consequently engine) life. I've made the fixtures, developed the process, and bought the bearings. Honestly, I expected a lot more interest than has been shown. Those of you that decided against it, please let me know what your hesitation is. I really thought I was providing a service to the 944 community. Thanks.

I'm doing it I just need to dig out the engine now.

I finished building my deck and all the deck furniture is out of the way. I now can reach the block

If I remember to it will be up on the engine stand Friday

Thanks for your support,

Jason

Cross border custons and shipping from Canada has held me back. I really like the idea. I had my bottom end checked and balanced at an excellent shop here including a complete mag and recondition on the rods. But I am still a bit uneasy over the stock bearings. They seem to be a big weak link.

im on the fence about doing a 3.0 crank stroker with this mod on my carillos, or doing an offset ground stroker.

For me it would be the cost, hassle & risk of sending my Wossners from UK to the US & then back again.

For the international crowd I could see this being more popular if you sent out a kit which contained the bearings & explicit instructions/blueprints for local machine shops to do the work on the rods.

Obviously the kit would have to sell for more than the cost of the bearings to cover your R&D costs & to cover your time researching the machining specs for the rods.

The nice thing about sending stuff out of EU and back is that when it returns you have to pay tax and customs again.

M. Mount,
what about doing a set of rods that are already blueprinted? I will be in new england in august. Might lug them over on the boat for fun..
