Default Stroker 2.8L timing remap

Hi all, my first post here. I bought a 88 Turbo S last year and I am now looking to make some mods, and I want some info before starting anything.

I read a lot of online literature regarding the stroker 2.8L. Seems like it was a hot topic a couple of years ago (2010-2011). After few years and when well done, is it still reliable? This is important for me as I am using my car as DD in the summer and I go on a track when I get the chance. So my car is not for racing.

While the mechanical part of the mod is clear to me, I am not so sure about the engine ignition re-mapping. Is there a how-to somewhere explaining how this is done? Does it need a new engine management system? If not raced, is the timing re-map needed?

I look forward for some information. Thanks.

Mathieu

The 2.8L stroker is a very reliable motor. The only thing I upgraded over the Bosch system was larger injectors and I used the SFR chip and MAF. The engine conversion can be expensive depending on what you do. At a minimum you will have $1,000 in pistons, another $1,000 in rods plus $1,000 for a crank. Injectors aren't too bad but they need to have a certain impedance (I don't remember what exactly). Search and you should be able to find it. You should probably upgrade the turbo also.

There is a definite power difference between the 2.5 and the 2.8.

Check out some of the "hybrid stroker" builds here. Can save a few dollars. Also,M-tune is your friend.

The more I read about MAFs, there more I want one. So, one promotes Speed Force Racing and the other one Rogue Racing. What about the others, i.e. Vitesse Racing, Lyndsey Racing. Considering I want mainly a DD (and some DE weekends) with a modern sport car power, what are the advantages/disadvantages of all of them?

Lol, big can of worms.

The reality is, that there are really only two real choices rogue and vittesse.

IMO, there is really only one choice, but that's my opinion .

To explain the differences would require quite a technical conversation. That the search function should provide.

I agree 100% that is why I ended up with Motec.

A 2.8 doesn't hurt the mechanical reliability.
Timing changes are possible with the factory computer given changes to the chips.
Search for Tuner Pro shows up a lot of good stuff.
This thread is awesome.

If you read this and the DIY approach is over your head, Rogue, Vitesse, 944 Enhancement, and Lindsey Racing all are active and have products and services to make it easy.

If you want to get away from 25 year old computers and wire harnesses, 944 Enhancement sells a TechGT system including wire harness and software configuration that will work.

My 2.8 started out with chips that were really made for a 2.5. It behaved knock safe but had very high EGT's for a track car, 1900F. I was concerned I would burn up exhaust valves. I advanced timing to bring down EGT's and used a knock counter to make sure I wasn't getting into trouble with detonation.

That sums it up I think -- you need to tune the motor you build, since no two motors are the same unless bone stock. I'd go with a full 3 liter, since you have to rebuild the motor either way and the additional cost is fairly trivial.
