Intercooler upgrade ?
I was just wondering about real intercooler upgrade benefits...
Did someone buy an upgraded intercooler from Lindsey, Vitesse or anywhere else and made a test to know what are the benefits ?
If you gain 1% of power for each 10 degrees drop, according to Lindsey the temperature drop is almost 10 degrees for the stage 1 intercooler. That means, you gain between 2 and 3 hp depending on your initial power...
Not sure it's worth the money...
What's your opinion and what's your experience on this ?

How about getting that 10 degree drop and then compensating for it by cranking up the boost slightly...
(I don't know really)
Apparently the stock IC has some flow restrictions so there's something to be gained there, but in the long run it sure seems (well, at least to me) that something like what SFR offers would be the way to go... there just isn't enough space for a large intercooler in the original location.
I've also been playing with the idea of water/air intercooler setup, dunno yet if it's feasible or not...

WIth a stock intercooler I was able to make over 400rwhp. That's on a dyno where heat soak is a killer, on the road the air flow is much better for the intercooler.
I would like to see a before and after HP/TQ curves...
Water injection might be a better and less expensive alternative.. And should yield good results...

Btw, i believe the stock 951 intercooler is the same as the 968 Turbo S intercooler. Is that right ?
And what about the 968 Turbo RS intercooler, same as 968 Turbo S i guess ?
If this is the case, that means this intercooler is good enough for up to 337 hp at the crank let's say... so enough for a stock 951 or even a slightly modified one...

Rather than a bigger intercooler, I think a vented nose (or better yet, a vented nose with water mist sprayers!) will make a much bigger difference. I would think more external flow through the intercooler would have a greater degree of temp change than a larger surface area radiating in an enclosed space would. It may look "rice", but I have seriously contemplated a vent in the hood behind the intercooler to further improve flow (and decided against it... lol). The fluid dynamics behind it would support the claim, unless I dropped a decimal point somewhere or am dividing by zero again...
The seat of the pants feel was significant when I did mine, so I am planning on grabbing a G-tech at some point on throwing on a stock nose piece again and do some back to back comparisons.

id agree with the vented nose panel,the sfr front mount intercooler is kinda on the $$$ side.as where a vented nose panel can be done by yourself(dremel or somesort) or buy one off gt-racing or lindsey.

Yeah, I'd like to see before & after dyno charts with intercooler upgrades as well. I suspect in the upper power-ranges of 400rhp+ it would help just from the lower restriction (does anyone know the correct way to increase the flow capacity of an intercooler?). Depending upon your turbo's efficiency and boost-level, you may be looking at a compressor-outlet temperature of 250-330 degree-F. Typical temperature drops for the stock intercooler is in the 120-150 degree-F range. Of course this is really dependant upon external ambient air temps as well as the heat-soaked temp of the intercooler itself (160 degree-F after 5 dyno pulls). Water injection after the intercooler will typically drop another 50-70 degrees-F below whatever exit temperatures are after the intercooler. An external intercooler water-spray will drop temps much, much less due to the two-stage heat-transfer.

There were a large # of people on the list that purchased that water injection kit a while back. I've yet to hear back on their impressions on perf. increase (dyno charts or temp measurements) and driveability. All I heard about were plumbing issues and problems w/ proper atomization.

Well, we should hear some results today. Couple of guys were dynoing their cars. One of the cars has a water injection kit (I have no idea which one). They are recording the temps as they dyno... I'm sure they will share the info with us.
I'm expecting favorable results from water injection. We shall see.
I believe a good water injection system must be tunable... I'm working on a kit that is controlled based on LOAD/RPM/BOOST by the piggyback.
Most kits I found are not suited for long WOT conditions (such as racing). Hopefully I can do something about it...

Hmm...I dont know if this helps, but isnt the 931 a bigger intercooler? Taken from the 930 and all

That's tru. The stock 931 didn't have a intercooler. It was 924 Carrera GT which has a intercooler. It produced 210hp. Carrera GTS had 245 hp and with Club sport engine it has 275 hp. GTR had even more power, up to 375 hp
