That car is probably worth $12k-$14k to someone who just wants to drive it and doesn't want to spend all their time wrenching. From the description, I'm sure the seller has a lot more money in it, but given his line of work he should know he can't get all of that back.

West Chicagoland has three levels to offer: one entry-level 951 ($5500), one middle-of-the-road 951 ($12k), and the significantly rebuilt 951 above ($20k).

For someone who likes wrenching and isn't picky about the paint, this one at $5500 is a very easy choice:

This third one is definitely priced too high. At $12k and all original, it shouldn't have anything wrong with it and should have some nice mods, so I think this one will be on the market until he goes down to around $8k: http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/cto/4125356336.html

I have definitely seen an upward trend of higher priced listings in the last year or so. Maybe the 944 market is going up?

That one for 5.5k i had a luck to test drive it, well after a test run it started to smoke so bad from the engine bay, might be oil on headers or seals going bad no idea, but that turned me of from it.
So i found 1989 turbo s for 10k track car, and well im having fun with it, maybe i overpaid for it, but it has lots of mods, and is ready for track, and it didnt had alot of miles on it, when i took it it was at 84k on june now it has 92k didnt hit any major problems exept camshaft reasembly because of the mangled woodruf key

forgot to mension i hired appraiser to value that car and their verdict was 10250$

Well, you can ask anything, just like you can sue anyone. You won't know if prices are truly rising until you see the actual sale price.

If you think that one is high, I just met a guy in the Chicagoland area who is building and rehabbing 944s. He is doing nice work but his asking price for a 944 with an LS1 swap would bring tears to your eyes.

I know the seller and his shop. IMHO, outside of the factory, this shop - Midwest Eurosport is top notch and one of the best and most experienced in the US when it comes to our cars and supporting the local race car community and I would have no doubt that the car is as represented. ME knows front engine cars. Its the owner's car and GLWS.

Any ideas on the what tipping point will be on 951s? Is it just more age? Or rust?

I've been following the 914 market and wonder if it could be a good representation of the market for 944/951s since the commonality of significant VW ties. Prices for 914s has really jumped. Rusty one with multitude of issues go for $2,000 - $3,500 and nice are $10k+ with the 2.0l engines. I wanted a 1.8 EFI car for DD use, but have been priced out if the market. Even BMW 2002s have increased in prices.

This. It helps me justify to my wife that it is worthwhile to continue putting money into the 951 including eventually a full respray and new upolestry.

Well, that's definitely worse than represented in the ad. Too bad. I wonder if the owner recently had the oil changed by someone who wasn't familiar with these cars and made a big mess with the oil filter replacement. Otherwise... If there's oil on the header then most likely it's a leaking cam cover gasket or leaking rear cam cover seal, so it would still be fairly cheap and quick to resolve. If the burning oil is on the crossover, then that's a different story - probably a leaking rear main seal or AOS, and the buyer would be looking at many hours of work just to be able to drive it around.

That's the Eurosport limited edition model. Very, very rare.
