shifter angle

recently I replaced my clutch. After putting the car back together, the shifter now instead of coming up straight through the hole, is angled towards the driver. I can still get the car in 1st or 2nd, but the shifter now rubs against the tub.
One thing that happened while moving the torque tube back was that I did not actually remove the shifter (I didnt realize it was attached to the torque tube). when I turned the torque tube 180 degrees, then the shifter poped off the tube.
Is it possible I just bent the shifter? any other reason why the torque tube would be angled? seems that for that to happen both the engine and transmission would have to not be seated correctly. '
Anyone run into something like this?

The position of the shifter in the cabin is adjustable via the linkage at the rear of the transmission. At the very back, when you undo the (I think) 15mm nut you can slide that linkage to the left and right because the hole is slotted. let me get a picture for you. ![](http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads10/Assembly1182732155.jpg)
That top hole is how you adjust it. The way to get it right the first time is to have a helper sit in the car and hold the shift lever centered, and then tighten up that rear nut while the shifter is held tight.

in addition to the side to side adjustment in the rear you can adjust the fore and aft position - the shifter mounts to the torque tube with slotted holes - you can loosen the bolts and move the shift level base back or forward quite a bit. That will change the angle to you liking.

We're still leaving the ChumpCar as is. It's our engine safety interlock :-)
