So, I understand that the lower white range on the water temp gauge spans 40*C to 60*C [104*F to 140*F], the first "third" mark represents 80*C [176*F], the second "third" mark represents 100*C [212*F], and the start of the red zone represents 115*C [239*F].

Does anyone recall reading [maybe in the FSM?] what Porsche specifies as the normal/typical operational temperature range for the 944/951?

I'm wondering if installing a lower temp thermostat/fan switch could actually force the engine to run cooler than Porsche intended.

Shop manual states correct engine operating temp (for setting fuel system) as oil temp of between 70-90 degree C.
As thermostat is designed for opening at 80-85 deg C then I would guess water temps of between 80-90 are probably ok.
