Why are the US driving lights illegal on the 951s? Hoping someone with some DOT knowledge can chime in here and let me know why only the foglight half of our lights are hooked up and the other side is blanked off, unlike the Euro version. Anybody know?

Naw, it is pretty simple. According to NHTSA, neither Bosch or Porsche wanted to certify the lenses. Seems crazy but that is what happened. Plus it saved money.

Because DOT is a bunch of regulation *****... As long as you grease them with greenbacks, you're OK.
It's like what happened with the FDA and breast-implants. You've got a product that has performed consistenly for 25-30 years and the FDA requires you to pay these exhorbitant 'testing' fees. So Dow-Corning boycotts and says, "What testing? They've been approved and are in use for 30-years! The failure rates have been consistent and within allowable limits! We're not paying anymore!"
So what does Kessler do? Calls the media, feeds them stories and stats on silicone breast implants and everyone has a field day! Of course what's lost in this whole ego battle is that the stats haven't changed! Just that people are more aware of them now due to the media hype. So in the end, everyone loses. Kessler certainly sounds like a **** name, eh??

Yeah, mine are holding up just fine !. . . ****'s. . .
But seriously. I just learned this weekend that some of the fastidious chaps who frequent Hollywood, primarilly those who "swing the other way" have pec and butt implants done.
Perhaps this is not the way you wanted this thread to track. . .

I have a question,
Not owning a 951 I am somewhat in the dark. My 968 has a driving/fog light assembly that they share 50/50 one side driving the other fog (obviously) So what you guys are discussing is that on the turbo only have of the assembly is functional?
With my car I can have the folowing lighting combos "on" at any one time.
-foglights only
-headlights only (low beam)
-headlights (low beam)/foglights
-headlights (high beam)/driving lights
I cannot have high beam headlights without the driving lights, and conversely cannot have the driving lights on by themselves.
So a 951 does not have the drivng lights? Is a driving light only for used in conjunction with high beams? The 951 light assembly looks large enough for both, so I understand only half of the assembly is in use? Are the foglights inner or outter in the asembly?
Onmy 968 they are mounted outter.
My car is also equipped with daytime running lights (Canada) and this is achived through the automatic engagement of foglights with the starting of the engine.
BTW my car is a USA car, I just added the daytime running light relay to gain this feature. (gov't requirement)

"So a 951 does not have the drivng lights?"
Yes, it doesn't come with the car. The driving-light position is empty. There is an aftermarket Bosch light that does include the driving-lights.
"Is a driving light only for used in conjunction with high beams? "
It depends upon how you wire up the driving light. I just used the high-beams to activate the driving-light relay. So whenever the high-beams go on, the driving-lights do also. This was the simplest method I found with the least amount of extra wiring used (saves weight ya know
