At this time of the year, towing it or driving it yourself (or with someone) is the only feasible answer.
From my experience, transporting companies get slammed with hauling cars southbound in the fall and early winter seasons. And northbound in the spring. Especially along the coastlines. This makes the rates go way up for those directions.
If you were transporting a car northbound in the fall or winter, you can usually catch a good deal with a transporter coming back with an empty truck. They will often add a car for a generously discounted rate.

And to add to Elliott's excellent points, "cheap" carrier's usually sacrifice on the customer service side first. If you haven't physically gone over the car before it gets shipped, don't be surprised if there are some extra dents/dings and possibly some miles on the car too. I've heard enough horror stories from other folks to make hiring a carrier my last option.

This is true....
I bought an 83 944 for $500 bucks in decent condition, and it came with a free 924S parts car. Killer deal. They were about 3-4 hours away, so it saved me money transporting the cars in one shot rather than renting a trailer and doing 2 round trips.
Anyway, the transporter loaded up the 944 just fine, but somehow while loading up the 924S the steering got turned and the car fell through the 2 ramps. So one front wheel was resting between the ramps, and the other hanging off the side. Unbelievable. The guy who sold me the cars was watching it all, so he explained how it happened to me.
Fortunately the car was a parts car, and was already so screwed up that the damage wasn't really critical to anything. I wasn't mad, just surprised.
To top it all off, the owner of that tow-truck happened to own a 944 and needed some parts. So I sold him a few things at top dollar prices, and we were both on our way. haha
