Many other engines are famous for certain things that makes them special. It seems like the 951 engine has nothing really noteworthy about it aside from "well its kind of big for a 4 cylinder.."
An opendeck block with notorious rod bearing problems and a turbo on the wrong side, didn't even come in 16 valve form. What does it have going for it?

BTW - some actual answers -
the turbo is on the correct side for longevity in the street car, you won't find many other 80's (or later) turbos that last as long.
the 8v head makes the same amount of torque as the 16v. its a great midrange performer and it out flows many 'fancy' heads.
you can have a 16v version if you want. If you are only concerned with totally stock engines then the 944 turbo is a very well rounded performer compared with any other 80/90's turbo engine.

The best thing about the 944 turbo motor is that it usual comes wrapped in the 944 body and chassis!

Oh man. I would absolutely buy that white RS500 even for obscene money right now. Growing up and watching them dominate the Australian touring car championship the Sierra Cosworth was alway my holy grail car. Sadly they were never sold in Oz. Now that I'm in the US, they are also not an option since they were only RHD.
