Early 996TT v 3.0T 944 ?."

not trying to hurt feelings here; time and technology move on, when it comes down to lap times the fact is that fun/nostalgia don't bring home trophies; if 951's were faster racecars then Porsche wouldn't be racing 991RSR's...just like a 996RSR doesn't hold a candle to the new 991RSR's...
let's just agree that both 944's and 911's are both great fun on the street and still very fast on track

For that small price difference I'd take a 996TT any day. In Norway a 996TT might be possible to buy for just over $100k. On the other hand, if I had not bought my 944 and saved the money I would be well over half the way to cash one out

Because the 996TT is certainly way easier to drive than the 951 suggests it may require silly speeds to get the same level of enjoyment/involvement, which could become a real issue on the road.
A 3L in a 951 should give enough power to embarass the chassis considering the relative supple ride needed for a road-oriented car, and may require enough concentration to provide similar thrills and enjoyment at inferior speeds - which will be already be quite a bit higher than any speed limit.
The effect of surprise when embarassing modern performance cars is a bonus that you may not get with a 996, and gives some satisfaction knowing that is with a self-built engine.
If I were to part with the cash needed for a 996TT I would instead build myself some muscle car. I regularly passenger in a 1200hp old chevy and this floats my boat far more than any "polished" factory car that was built in thousands and that is still not yet uncommon enough. With the power of a 3L the 951 begins to disclose a certain level of roughness that goes nicely at odds with its "dated modernity", all adding further to its charms.
FWIW anyway.

Anyway 25 years of technology can do wonders, but if you know Porsche history when the 88 Turbo S was introduced it put to shame the 911t of his time and the sedan dville 928, when the 968 turbo S was also introduced Porsche realized the big mistake they had just made by creating a car that not only could out perform the mighty 911tt and the 928gts but it also cost less, a business decision was taken to end the 944 line and continue to sell the overpriced beetle and convinced future generations that the rear engine design was superior, something we now know was accomplished. But dare to wonder what could have happened if Porsche decided to continue with the 944 line, do you guys remember the 968 turbo RS? Didn't that car ran with a restrictor plate to keep the power down an qualify for a race class, lol.
Just enjoy this video, the car you are about to see was banned from competition in Germany I wonder why?

As the dummy who hasn't pushed a 928 near its limit I can tell you Lart that a high power 3L 951/968 will handle a bit funny on the limit unless it's set stiff to the point it will be unbearable on the road, which is what we are talking about on here.
The 968TS was a compromised car, and even if most journos raved about it back then several still mentioned it was a car that could be fully exploited only by well-experienced drivers, in the sense it had more thrust than its limited weight could handle, which is probably also one of the reasons why we 3L folks enjoy our old 951/968T so much.

to add to my point for example the butt ugly skyline curb weight is almost 3900 lbs, have you guys seen a 951 next to a skyline? the 951 looks like a dwarf, the skyline is much taller, wider and definitely ubber fugly, but with the rocket science tech it has, it was faster at the ring than the 911 Turbo GT2, which is near 3100lbs? why pure technology.
Luke it's pointless to resist

In my mind, there is just something charming about driving a car with waay more power than the chassis can really handle. Super composed, computer aided cars are no fun to me, it loses its magic if the car can't put a little bit of fear into me when I put the hammer down. The truth is though that us 4 banger guys dont have a chance against the 911 chassis. There are 1000+ rwhp 996TT's running around that would eat the very fastest 3.2l 951's for lunch. They simply have displacement and 35+ years of development on their side. I think we do well enough to embarrass GT3's.

Eat them where though Doug? On these '3 honks and mash the throttle' races (lol)?? Don't ever see these big hp 911s on the track. Sure on a flat road rolling or standing start they have to win. Hp isn't everything on a racetrack though.
ps...I realise the OP wasn't talking about on the track. :-)

I hope I never have to sell either one.
