Default 1987 944 Turbo Oil Pressure sending unit issue

Hi,

I just recently bought a new oil pressure sending unit for my 1987 944 turbo. I installed the sending unit and started the car. The gauge was working fine. I then walked inside to wash up and I let the car just idle and when I returned the gauge was stuck pegged at 5 bar. Now when I turn the key to the on position without starting the engine the warning light comes on and the gauge is pegged. When I start the car the warning light goes out and the needle stay pegged 5 bar the whole time. Im guessing that either the sending unit is faulty or the wire for the gauge broke somewhere. The warning light appears to work as it should while the needle just stays pegged. where exactly does the wire that conects to the post on the sending unit for the needle go? I was going to attempt to run another wire from the sending unit to where ever its suppose to go to see if it was just a faulty wire and if so just replace it. I can see that the wires for the sending unit run into the firewall and im guessing they either run directly to the gauge or to the dme computer....any help here?

you got the wires swapped, if you hook up wires for the sender backwards, it'll peg the gauge. if you ground the sender out, it'll read 0.

I dont have the wires reversed, like i said the gauge was working fine then all of a sudden stopped working after it was already warmed up. does any one know where the wire for the gauge connect to? the warning light works as it should just not the gauge. please read original post thanks.

Is there a way i can test the gauge to confirm its the sender? my initial thought was the wire broke somewhere once it heated up and with a broken wire its would just read 5 bar all the time.

hey, now that my gauge is operating correctly I noticed after I have been driving for a while the car idles at 1.5 bar on the oil pressure guage. when I'm driving the oil pressure tracks normally and my warning light doesnt come on or anything and the car sounds and performs health as can be. Should I be concerned? I also noticed that my gauge never really goes above 4.5 bar even on a cold start. I have been considering maybe the gauge was reading a half bar off? but idk how the needle would have been bumped out of place. thoughts?

I recently replaced my unit with a carquest piece, Uro brand I believe. Worked out well. My readings show first start, regardless of temp to 4.5. Soft driving will keep the gauge at the range all day at idle. Only under hard driving will it decrease. Usually to around 3. I use synthethic Valvoline VR-1 20-50 and a Mahle OC-75 oil filter.

I had a FAE and it died after two years. Picked up a Uro mainly as a test and it has been fine for a year ($15 from Autohaus AZ). However, Uro parts are not usually high-quality and terrible. Actually, after dealing with Uro blower motor resistors on my e39 BMW, I am about to say f-it and stay factory only parts. The knock-off Euro made-in-China opposed to Germany part quality is terrible anymore and good at wasting your time.

My gauge needle is sometimes stuck on 5 without twitching, sometimes wiggles around down to about 3, then pegs again at 5. Bad connection, or bad sender, or what?

Thoughts?

Update: My oil pressure gauge no longer wiggles or moves, but now is pegged at 5+ all the time, with no movement whatever, regardless if the key is inserted and/or the engine is running, warm or cold.

From the above posts and a slew of others on Rennlist, this suggests to me that the sender is shot, or the wires to it are not making an electrical circuit.

Given these facts, what other interpretation would explain this?

Otherwise, it seems time for a new sender.

Thoughts?
