Mine runs an Emerald k3. As mentioned there are lots of options, main thing is to understand what the ecu will do for you and make sure you have someone who knows their trade to tune it.

Might be worth a read up on basic techniques on mapping and ecus as it will help in the long run.

You might also want to look at some gauges such as boost, air fuel ratio and maybe exhaust gas temp if you plan many mods. They give a good indication that all is well!

Before I installed a MoTeC, I had a Haltech Interceptor running with the stock ECU which worked very well.

Gave all the fuel and ignition control needed for tuning, but still left the stock ECU knock control and other functions in tact. Haltech Interceptors are cheap second hand.

I'm going with the AEM EMS-4.

The nice thing is that they also provide a full wiring harness on which you only have to install the connectors yourself (and do the wrapping). I ordered a Trigger Pack with it as well for the single coils i'm going to use (Bosch dumb coils)

The costs for the package are quite low. 700 for the ECU, 225 for the wiring harness, 150 for the triggerpack and about 100 for all the connectors.

What nobody is mentioning, and is probably the most important aspect, is that his mechanic only works with Motec. No doubt he could install another system but tuning it and setting it up might take much longer than a system he had done a number of before. Unless the OP is willing to go through all headaches of being the first in his area I would suggest he stick with what his mechanic knows inside and out. $4000 might sound expensive but spending $2000 and then chasing problems for several years might prove that the Motec price was a bargain. How many guys have gone the cheaper route and then sold their cars in frustration? Just my $0.02

Most people aren't commenting on how expensive it is, but how cheap it is.

lindsey racing 340 kit. Lindsey Racing wastegate and blow off. LR 4 inch exhaust and 55 lb injectors/ 3.0 bar regulator with LR Maftuner
More or less same spec as I have. I am actually quite happy with the mafterburner. It does what it is supposed to do.

I have this in my garage ready for the 951. Will go into the car at some point but I am one year late in my project due to being ripped off on an engine....
At the moment I am making a Microsquirt for my Lotus Seven Duratec. Should be up and running end of June.

I don't think I saw anyone ask this yet (or you answer) so I'll ask it:

What are you trying to solve by going standalone?

I don't argue that there are some great advantages to a standalone... two biggest advantages (to me) are the fresh wiring harness, and the infinite control and adjustments you can make. But for a basic car like yours, it seems a little overkill, no?

We are certainly quite a few who initially installed e.g. Vitesse kits then developed the need to delve further into the tuning.

It's always the same question : how far does the owner intend to go with mods?

I have never looked at the Motec software but if it's as good as anyone says then $4k installed AND tuned sounds a pretty good deal to me.

I went after market when the original DME fried itself, I admit I didn't really comprehend the scale of the project. Conversely I didn't understand the potential! I do now though even though my car is still almost stock mechanically, still learning with the ECU

Out of interest those with after markets is it worth us sharing the core parts of our maps (ignition and fuelling) along with a description of the mods?

I am just trying to get the damn thing to run right. The mafterburner is an absolute joke. The car runs differently evertime i drive it. I want it to be more drivable and make more power. It's to rich right now and has no bottom end, wont even light the tires up when it should. My mechanic says he can tune a car with a motec with his eyes shut sitting on a beach in the caribbean.

If you can afford the Motec then sure get it. However, I am running a mafterburner and my car runs fine and the same every time I drive it. Are you sure there is not something else going on with your car?

If anyone is interested, I have a full top of the line LINK standalone with harness and assorted accessories (set up for setquential w/ coils etc) for sale. It's in the U.S. I thought I had a buyer but he's backed out so if anyone is interested. I would sell this at a very decent price reduction.
