Jim's explanation is solid. If your caliper has dust boots, rejoice. If it has metal ringed seals (scraper), you'll get a headache. They are not interchangeable.

The inner seal down in the caliper bore is cheap. The gray boots that you get will be useless, expensive, and delay completion of your project for a week or so while you work with the dealer to get the complete kit.

This is going off memory, but I pulled my hair out for a week over it.

I have an 86. Looking at the Zeckhausen site, there is a kit with "pressure seals" and "dust boots". I see no reference to "scrapers".

Can someone clarify?

The pressure seals are down in the bore. They keep the fluid behind the piston. The outer seals keep crud from getting to the pressure seals.

I get it. Where are "scrapers" in this equation?

"Scrapers" is the term used for describing the outer dust seal. I would source them before removing them from the caliper.

I don't think you'll find them on Zecks site. For the old style caliper, they sell the pressure seal that is needed. If you dont remove your old scraper, then the pressure seal from Zecks will most likely be all that is needed. If you remove (and almost assuredly damage) your scaper, then you'll wish you hadn't called Zecks, since Porsche will sell you the entire kit that comes with the seal you ordered from Zecks.

Is this making any sense?

My point was: If the OP gets the seals from Z or RE, he still needs scrapers they don't have. If he then calls paragon, they don't have them unless he gets the whole kit (for the 28 and 36 sizes, if that is even his sizes).

I'm just pointing out that Porsche will sell him all 16 piston kits for under $700.

The end.

No no no, you dont need that entire list. You getthe kits, which are at the top. It all comes out to just over $400, for all 4 calipers.

So, let's see if I have got it.

If you don't have the later model with the rubber outter dust boot, you have a model with scrapers. Scrapers are effectively a dust boot. Regardless if you have scrapers or dust boots, you still need a pressure seal [available from Zecks].

Scrapers are hard to source and not listed on the Zecks site.

You can [generally] rebuild the calipers if you don't remove the scapers and just replace the pressure seals.

How's that?

No, it's over $800. You need 16 kits total since there are 4 pistons per caliper.

Ya pretty much got it correct.

Yes.

Early calipers are expensive to rebuild.

Unfortunately I know all too well, my TS brakes need rebuilt. If I hadn't just purchased new pads and rotors I would have just said screw it and purchased some Big Reds and rebuilt the rears only. At least then you're getting some sort of tangible improvement for all the money outlaid.
