Default Clutch Removal Verdict

What's easier?

Removing the engine to replace the clutch, or removing the transmission and working forward toward the clutch?

Removing the trans and TT will be much easier. Unless you've got other work to do on the engine, then yank it.

I removed a tranny for the first time on an '83 last May. I took it out to remove the gas tank. I put the car up on jackstands. Things I've read made me think it was a lot harder than it turned out to be. Once you've done it, you'll think it was pretty easy.

I got a low profile trans jack from Harbor Freight that make the removal and installation a one man show. It cost $65 and I highly recommend getting one. You don't have to remove the torque tube, if you twist it to clear the dog ears it slides back far enough to change out the clutch.

You mean you aren't supposed to manhandle the transaxle in and out of the car? Welp...

To be fair, it was the end of the day, I had been using the jack but for some reason the TA got hung up, then I said screw it, ripped the jack out, lowered the trans onto my chest then slid it off me to the side where I had an old piece of carpet waiting then dragged it out.

I removed the tranny with a moto jack...replaced the clutch...then promptly did it all again when the reference sensor hit the flywheel and sheared off!

Don't have Harbor Freight up here. I was scared a tranny jack was really expensive. Maybe I can find one for not too expensive.

I think the Canadian equivalent is Princess Auto.

How long does it take to remove and/or put in a tranny?

For just a tranny swap no more than a couple of hours.

However long it takes you to:

1) Remove the cat-back
2) Remove the 12 bolts holding the axles to the trans
3) Remove 4 bolts holding tranny to the TT
4) Remove 2 electrical clips and unhook the selector rod.
5) Remove the 2 bolts holding the tranny and drop it out.

It's actually really easy.

That's what I thought. Shop book time is 6 hours though, and I thought no way.
