Default Lobster bends

There is a popular trend going around with lobster bends and welds. basically where you get a straight pipe and cut it on an angle and turn it into a bend.

I had a go at doing this. My welds aren't the best but im still learning!

Usually people leave it like this but i thought i'd polish it to see how it looks.

What do you guys think?

I might use it for my intake

Very good job Paul, especially for a beginner!

Have to chime in with Eddie though, just wanted to say you did it? 45 degree bends are readily available aren't they?

I had some free time so i thought i'd try it. It is a bit of work. I guess once you get the hang of it, it's easier.

Thanks mate, Yeah pretty much haha. Yep 45 degree bends are easy to get, cheap too. A lot cheaper then getting that made..

Lobster.. hmm. I like that term. I'm used to saying, "pie cut" I first saw it grow in popularity in Japan. I can't verify if that's the origin or not. Waaaaaaay too much work if you can use a mandrel bend. Very cool style though. Good work and Keep at it. You will get better very fast by making those kind of bends... there is a LOT of welding.

Don't quote me but i think it originated from titanium because the availability of bends? because i use to always see titanium exhaust with cut welded (lobster) bends and it looked pretty cool and people started doing it to stainless and aluminium for show.

I agree, a lot of work! I can use a TIG but to get the very nice weld takes practice.
I'll try another one since i have more off cuts laying around. besides if it looks nice i'll use it for the air filter.

Nice first go!
This from the guy building my car. He's been at it for a bit longer than you though Paulyy. Couple of his custom bikes.

I wish I could weld half as well as you Pauly.

Amazing job on this motorbike, but how many tens of hours did it take him to do all that welding?!

You can use a small TIG, all you need is a 15amp socket.
I did use one that uses a whopping 60 amps of 3 phase power.

Thanks! I've seen you pose that before. Looks like he had more heat into his (note the colour) maybe i'll do that and see if i can get it to glow more.

Thanks Thom, I enjoy welding, it's like a form of art.

Realistically it's ~15 min per circle of weld. It look me longer because i had to figure out how to hold everything in place where a pro would have probably made up some sort of jig to hold it.
