I would get blow by when the engine was very hot and it would then use oil, although the amount of usage was still reasonable (1/4 quart in a half-hour track session). The oil would get dirty fairly quickly, so I would change it after every weekend at the track. In normal driving, the engine did not use oil in significant amounts.

Cylinder scoring has no effect on the head gasket lifetime.

I was happy to live with a little loss of power and more frequent oil changes to save a ton of money.
