I have used quite a few sets of Wossners (and JEs, Mahle and others).
Why do I like Wossners? From a technical stand point they are ‘equal’ to the others. The ausil coatings have been accepted by several manufactures such as BMW and Wossner supplies some pistons to Porsche motorsports.
The forgings and alloys are good, no one really has any advantage in that department.
The main thing is that Wossner will make anything you want in low production numbers (as in one set, even one piston if you really want)
If you want a 106.5mm 16v piston in a 9.5:1 compression ratio with low tension rings and DLC coated wrist pins in a non-stock location they will make it.
I suppose the down side is that you are responsible for specing out all the custom design information and you have to review the drawings before production. That’s great stuff if you know what you want and dangerous stuff if you don’t!
From my direct experience JE could not care less for the 944 market. They sell 10,000 chevy pistons for every 944 set. Mahle is getting better but they used to wait until demand grew (and price) and then run a bunch of sets and sell them at higher pricing. I would rather work with a company that appreciated my business and will fabricate the design that I would want.

If I wanted a set of Alusil compatible 104.5mm, 8v pistons to use with a 3.0 crank, that made 8-1 comp when used with a 2.7 head do Wossner have a part number, and can I order these direct from Germany ?.

When I bought these, I recall you were just beginning to explore the Wossner's. They really hadn't been proven in the 951 at that time except by a few.
If I were starting a fresh build today with you or another qualified builder, it's very likely I would want to use them.

Mahle's can be had in 3-4 weeks. They do not make you "wait" until production numbers come up or anything such. They will make you 1 piston or 100 sets, the lead time is the same. They will even expedite them should you want to pay a little extra.
Quality equal?, not even close. Or I should say, not unless they changed over the years! The last set I saw had a very thick, crappy looking coating on it. I wanted to measure the piston and couldn't get an accurate reading. I was told to "trust" that the coating was fine. That being said, the piston did work fine but, that is not the type of company I want to work with. Hopefully things have changed..
