Thinking about a large oil cooler. good or bad idea?
I was thinking though the idea of a larger oil cooler..
I was looking at the eBay coolers and did a search on the rx7 forums and they say the cheap coolers do the same job as the expensive ones..
So what if i mount this one behind my intercooler?
bad idea as air needs to pass through the intercooler?

Mount it somewhere else. Not behind i/c or rad.

I am pleased with the KISS aux cooler that mounts on the drivers side and comes with the lines to easily plumb in. This cooler lowered my oil temps at Sebring in dead summer to an acceptable 240 - 245 degrees. I bought mine from Lindsey. Mike

Then why do they make expensive ones? Regardless, if you are looking for efficiency then buy a quality cooler (mocal etc) you get what you pay for when it comes to this stuff. You can run a oil cooler behind your intercooler that shouldn't be an issue. Depends on what your goals are..
end tanks are easy to modify with the right equipment which i've got.
basically my goals are for a reliable 400 rwhp street motor that does see boost often and WOT now and then and possibly a few track days.
I was thinking if i go behind the IC (only place i can think of) i'll make ducting from the old oil cooler original position to flow to the new one on either side?

i bought a nice cooler on ebay, an10 fittings and looks like the one above. Works great. DO not use the rx7 cooler, it was too big and didnt work properly on two cars that we put them on. Ebay cooler was a big upgrade believe it or not. Similar to the Satrab but not as nicely built.

Have you considered one from a 968? Its almost double the size of the 951, and will bolt in the same place. But you'll also have to change the oil filter housing as well...

Ive played around w/ several oil cooler configurations on track cars.
I have now opted away from putting anything in front of the radiator, and would think in front of or behind the intercooler would also be a less than desirable mounting location.
Currently running two mocal coolers in-series installed on either side of the radiator, -13 on the driver side and a -19 on the passenger side (this requires removal of the PS cooling coil and the windshield washer reservoir and if retaining the brake cooling ducts, some minor sheet metal trimming).
One lingering question that I had/have that I would like to hear some thoughts on:
Line size, -10 large enough or will it be restrictive and cause too much pressure drop, or is -12 better for lower pressure drop. Without measuring pressure before and after, there is no way of knowing what the pressure drop would be. What have you guys been using?
