The 6.0 is a poor choice as far as Diesels are concerned, unless you build the motor with aftermarket parts from the ground up it they are pure ****. Service departments make their mortgage payments with them even in plain stock one owner form....
The 6.4 is better , still like the 6.0 paired with a weak tranny and the 6.7 is simply awesome.
Out of the older diesels you cannot beat the Duramax/Alison combo, the Cumminscomes close but the transmission is the weak point again.

So very true about those 6.0 Fords. Had one. Bought it for $24,500 and sold it with over $25,000 worth of receipts! But I ended up with 600hp and 1,000tq. Now, had I known what I know now, I could've saved a lot of money. International built the motors for Ford. They originally came out with 275hp. But with the hp wars heating up between the big three, Ford boosted power to 325. The emissions equipment and lack of head studs were the result of all the engine troubles those poor things had. After I took care of those issues, it was as dependable as any other diesel out there.
The 6.4 is better but they also have injector issues as well as a few design flaws that are coming out now. As for making power, it doesn't get any better. They rival both DMax and Cummins in Power catagory. Still, the DMax has the most potential for power.
The 5R100 tranny that has backed up Ford since 2003 is the most bullet proof tranny to date. Even out mustering the Alimighty Allison. Allison's reputation started with their commercial applications. Sadly, the Allison's put into the mass market pick ups have not held up to power over 450hp. The Ford's 5R100 can hold 600 whp for extended periods depending on how you drive them. The tranny is so good, my new 6.7, which I agree and can attest is simply awesome, is backed up by an even better 6 speed Transmission that even out performs the 5R100 in every way. The Allison is in need of some major updates for mass market. As the trucks came out with more power, the Allisons weren't able to keep up. All transmissions can be built up though. And when the Allison is built for performance, it's hard to break.
The Duramax is a robust motor, but they've been plaqued with injector issues. And it's twice the amount of labor to fix almost everything on a Duramax over a Ford or Cummins. Still, nothing makes for a hot rod motor like the Duramax. They can make so much power, it's insane.
As for older diesels, I agree, the DMax is a good truck to get. But don't forget the 7.3 Ford. It's bullet proof. So is the older 12valve Cummins. And yes, transmission on both are weak.
