Default Shifter rod retaining bolt help

I decided to swap trannies on the 944, as I was finishing up I overtorqued that little M8 bolt that acts as a set screw for the shifter rod onto the shifter assembly and the head came off.

I tried removing he bolt with a left hand drill bit and easy outs, none of which worked so I just drilled it.

I was curious if anyone has tried helicoiling this thing? I might give it a shot tomorrow but I'm worried the inserts are too long.

I really dont want to drop the tranny again to replace the whole shifter rod

Grainger's sells helicoils in various lengths, and google says there's one in Houston. You could probably get away with clipping one short too. Finding a pointy bolt might be more of a challenge... (grinder?).

I'll have to pop by there, I always forget about grainger for some reason.

I already ordered a new pointy bolt from lindsey. 9 bucks for the bolt and 10 bucks to ship it...gotta love porsche

I have my old stock shift rod. If you can get yours out, bring it by and take mine. I'll fix yours and use it as a back up to my experimental carbon fiber one.

P.S.. Love your monster V8 951.

i measured the wall thickness of the shift rod and its like 9mm, I doubt theres an insert that small, but I'll bug grainger today. If not, it ill be another fun evening/afternoon/random time of day pulling the transmission.

also love your monster v8 951 as well
