Default Longer rear lug/wheels bolts. Do I have to take the hubs off to do the job?

Is there enough space to get the old bolts out and replace them with longer ones without taking the hubs off?
My car is an 1988 turboS

Thanks!

Yes there is enough space. On my '89 NA I replaced mine with 79mm studs I think they were. I used a bearing, washer and extra lug nut with an impact gun to pull the new studs into place. This was on the rear

No need to remove the hubs.. Plenty of space. The studs I have on mine are 1" longer than stock. No need to remove the hub even with those.

I think if you run the 100mm studs from Paragon (maybe the best priced studs?) you'll need to take them off. I changed my bearings at the same time so I can't say for sure, but I checked out of curiosity.

A note about running 100mm studs, without big enough spacers you'll need a special deep well socket as the standard deep wells aren't deep enough.

Just did 86mm studs on my late offset car. Used the technique of pulling the parking brake cable and using the space between the shoes. Do some searching on here, you'll find it.

I strongly recommend not using an impact wrench to pull them in... I think that can over-stress them. I put the spacers and wheels back on, put a little grease on the rounded part of the lug nut, then just use my torque wrench - set a little higher than 96 ft lbs (like 100 or 105).

I've seen a number of broken studs at the track (though, usually not on 944s) and I wonder if it's related to trying to "zip" them on with an impact gun.

Important detail – make sure you check your lug nuts several times after replacing the studs – it may take some stress on the studs to fully seat them – and if they move a little bit your nuts will come loose!

I'm pretty sure you can leave them on in the back, but if you are still running the dust covers on them, you will have to take it all apart for the front. I just did it this last summer, so I know I'm correct on this.
