New 951 owner from NJ here
Morning all! I just picked up a 1986 944 Turbo with 88k on it. The 944 was the first Porsche I ever got to ride in. 17 years later, I now own one. For those interested I will be keeping a log here of it's restoration.
The supposed history of the car is that it was stolen and found in a cargo container. This is what I was told from the PO and when I ran a carfax it shows a salvage history so while the details may be wrong it has had a checkered past. The body is in very rough shape and every panel needs some kind of work. Why did I buy such a rough 944 turbo? I love the color. It is pearl white with a burgundy interior. I had never seen one this color, I thought it was aftermarket until I did some digging and found out it was a factory color.
Below is a list of what the PO did:
-Rebuilt water pump from 944online
-Timing belt, plugs, wires, belt, radiator hose kit, and belts from Lindsey Racing
-New Bosch fuel pump
-ECU/DME rebuilt from ECUDoctors
-Fuel filter replaced
Not sure where to go from here. Thinking about taking it to a body shop to make sure there is nothing to damaged. From there making sure it is mechanically sound.
I do have a question...should this car run sluggish and a little rough? I remember when I first took a ride in my uncles 944 NA. The first thing I remember is that it ran similar, does my memory serve correct?
The Goal: Restored visually to as close to 100% as possible. I used to be into all kinds of aftermarket anything. Now I am a bit more of a purist though I may consider some small upgrade in performance.

Welcome, and nice looking car!
Sluggish and a little rough? It may be time for engine mounts on the rough part, but lag until 2900 RPM is normal.
Search this forum in your free time and you'll get a pretty good idea on what mods to make and what maint to perform.
Clarks garage is mandatory reading for a new owner, BTW.

Congrats on the rare color! I am sure someone will ask you soon to post the VIN. Check out this recent post. https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...-for-sale.html
I would recommend you check the compression on all 4 cylinders. Clean all of the grounds. Pressure test the intake system looking for vacuum leaks. Inspect the spark plugs. Make sure all of the fuel lines are in good shape. The list can go on and on. These are a few cheap and easy things to do as a new owner to get an idea of what kind of shape the engine is in.
Welcome to the community. I look forward to hearing about your progress.

MYMach,

I have an 86 951 as well and use it as my daily driver and I'd be more than happy to check your car out and also take you for a ride in mine as a comparison.

She's a beaut! Pearl is a great color to live with, hides road grime and cleans up well for showing off.
Sluggish is not a term I would use to describe the Turbo, but in town, that might be accurate, kind of a 'all or nothing' thing, 0 - 60 in 6 sec when you try, hero to zero if your napping. Running rough? No. I suspect Vac leaks. Don't 'think' about changing the Vac lines, just do them ALL, NOW. I would also suspect any Aftermarket parts, NOT the parts from our Porsche type Vendors, but things like Spark Plugs, Wires, ect. Sometimes the best intentions get waylaid, example ... Triple Electrode Platinum coated hi buck Plugs run like crap in these cars, mr. basic Bosch WR 7 DC Coppers [stock] make a world of difference.
P.S. It would be an HONOR to go to Cars and Coffee with Scott, nice crowd he hangs with, he shares pics with us, real beauties there, but he tends to ONLY show the Car pics!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!
Tedro951, I googled and found Clark's Garage...better get settled in and start reading
KY944TurboNewbie, I have already posted the VIN over at that thread. It was actually my first post. After reading "Clarks" I am hoping to find the usual quirks to these car and learn the ins and outs of it.
Scott 951, I am in Medford, where are you? I have actually heard of that meet from being on the Benz forums, I also have a C32 AMG, and almost went to a few. I would love to come to the one this Saturday but I have a vet appointment. I may be able to just stop by till about 9:30. Will let you know. If I cannot make it I would still love to have another, more seasoned 951 expert, look over my car and give me their two cents.
Ben 951S, Thanks for the invite. I drive a work car most of the time. If this was my daily driver I would just pop in some time and show you. I will keep in touch and may be able to bring it by some time.
Ronin-951, Thanks, I LOVE the color. I will see about digging in the vac lines first. From what I can tell the previous owner at least bought all of his parts off Porsche specialists and NOT Napa so hopefully I won't have to undo much of what he did.
racerxrick, Thanks

If you suspect vacuum leaks and have to take off the intake, make sure you get the venturi delete also to clean things up assuming it hasn't already been done.
