My car is mainly a track car now, but the I think the 6 speed is better in every way, though I do have some closer gears that I will put in at some stage.

I did this conversion, and it was a very simple deal.
The only big difference is that the Left Side 968 Axle is shorter that the Right Side (RS is the same as the 951's) I used the OEM 951 cross member and a Lindsey solid mount. You don't have to change the 951 shifter or rod, as long as you have the 968 transmission mounted shift linkage.
The only pisser is that I don't have a speedo. Not sure how to retrofit the 968 speedo to fit my 89 Turbo S.
The conversion took me less than 2-hours to install: 951 out & 968 in.
Very NICE on the track. Used this configuration at Sebring and turned consistent low 2:27's. Missed a couple of shifts (forgot that I was driving a 6-speed) but the close ratio worked very well for me.
Here is a link to see & hear a 968 trans in a 944TS.

Does anybody know about the speedo conversions ?

I just went to the 6 speed in a 2450# 350/400 HP/TQ track car. I was worried about shifting too much, but it hasn't been an issue. I really like the setup.
I only used the 968 tranny and left axle. The 968 shifter didn't work with the 944 shift rod, so I stuck with the 944 shifter and rod. You may want to drill the threads out of the shift rod at the rear as the 968 tranny has a threaded setup where the 944 used a grub screw. I also spaced the trans mount down about 1/4 inch to keep the shift mechanism from hitting the tank. Not good for axle angles, but cheap and effective.
968 LSD is said to be compatible with G50. I can't confirm that, but can confirm it's not the same as the 944 box.
