Default New (to me) head. Should I have decked?

Hey guys, I just picked up this slightly used recently rebuilt head. Should I have it slightly decked to remove the corrosion? Using WF/stock gasket.

One of the exhaust ports was super black on the flange like it was leaking a LOT. I cleaned it off but that valve has a lot of carbon on it you can see in the picture. Definitely something was leaking and not happy.

What are peoples thoughts on decking a good amount to increase compression? I know some guys do it but is it not a good idea? And why?

Nothing against it. i got mine resurfaced when i did my head gasket. it had some corrosion that got filled up and made true.

Id want to get that head resurfaced or decked.

I just decked mine .020" ( 0.5mm )
Plenty of valve clearance, should bump compression to about 8.4 or 8.5:1

I say take off the minimum in order to clean it up.

Just mill enough to get it flat. I took off 0.030 years ago and the amount of gain at low end wasn't that much if any. Getting more boost will get you more HP then the mill ever will. Go to a larger displacement like 2.8 and that does make a difference.

First check to see if the head is perfectly straight , the remove the minimum to ensure the ideal mating surface.

Then if you do decide to remove more material then you should measure the head thickness to make sure no machine work was done prior , not to exceed the limits .

Don't forget the guides and seals. as well as seating the valves and , valve spring pressure.
