I'm new to the Porsche world, and currently in the market for a 944. I'm leaning towards the 944 Turbo, and want to make sure I'm paying a fair price before purchasing the vehicle. I haven't personally laid eyes on the car yet, it's about a 6 hour drive. Seller says $6100 is bottom dollar he will take...does this sound fair?
Stats:
- 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo
- 130k miles
- No wrecks
- All original (no mods)
- Cracked windshield
- Cracked dash
- Cracked front seats
- 1 small spot of rust just behind passenger door (paint is bubbled)
- Paint faded on sunroof
- "A couple paint spots have been touched up"
- Motor/turbo are running strong
- Brakes and battery are new
- Tires have life left

Personally I think that sounds a little high. Windshield with antenna should be about 850 to replace. That being said.... Most important thing is the service records. Motor mounts replaced? Timing Belt/Water Pump replaced recently? What oil leaks exist? Has the clutch been replaced? If it has substantial service records and has a PPI at a reputable shop, it might be. I think it is primarily the care and maintenance that is placed in these cars that make them more valuable to a knowledgeable buyer.

ditto sounds a bit to high based upon the condition....I would also inspect the rust spots more thoroughly as I had a "bubble" that need more attention than I thought.

Did your bubble start off anything like the one pictured below (looks to be in the same area as yours)? It's kind of a far away shot, but you can see it.

Ouch.....that rust looks like it starts at the front fender and runs all the way to behind the passenger door...personally if that is the car....I'd run away unless you can do a lot of work and have the $$$'s to invest.
The one true statement on theses forums is "there are no cheap Porsche's".
If you are in the market for a Turbo (and there are excpetions) plan on spending about $12K.....either $8-9K for a good one +$2-$4K on issues that can and will come up.....or spend $6K and hope the bleeding stops $6K later.
Good Luck in your Hunt....and if you can run away....as Porsche is more addictive and actually more expensive than Keith Richard's 70's Heroine Habit.

Honestly I purchase mine in the same condition, except for the rust issue for 2,800... of course mine had 185k miles on it. I wouldn't pay more than 5k for it at the max.

Wow yeah that's more than just a "little bubble." The general consensus around here is that these cars don't rust on their own; they usually only rust if there was a poor collision repair at some point in the past. Now, granted, these cars have been through a lot of hands by now, and chances of finding one that was NEVER in an accident are probably pretty slim - but you'd still want one that was repaired properly.
My car had some damage in that same spot, and just like Alex posted above, when I had it fixed, they found more than just a "small bubble" when they took it down. Granted it was NOT anywhere NEAR as bad as Alex's - but it was there. Someone in the past attempted to fix it with bondo, did it improperly, and the bondo swelled up. When the body shop cut out the bondo they found corrosion.
I had my guy fix it properly - cut out all the sheet metal there on the rockers and replaced it with fresh metal. It was a $2400 repair. Not cheap... and that was the "cash" discount. Probably would've been closer to $3k if I didn't know the body man personally and didn't pay in twenties!
IMO what Scott says is correct. Expect to pay $10-$12k for a proper Turbo (either all in one lump sum for a clean car, or in pieces via cheaper car + repairs.... even more so if you don't plan to work on it yourself.) There is no such thing as a "cheap Porsche." And even if you buy a clean $12k example, it's still wise to have a few bucks in reserve - these cars are old, stuff breaks due to age, even on the most well-kept examples.

That to me looks like a parts car or rip the thing to pieces and spend 25000.00$ plus fixing it ![Frown](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Way nicer cars on here for that price.
If you have a rust bubble that is 1 inch by 1 inch count on 5 to 6 inches around it needing work.
thats my thoughts
I paid 17500.00$ for my car with 40000 original KM second owner and it was like new when I bought it other than needing cleaning.
Comparing my car to the pic you posted, to me it's worth about 1000.00$ and I am obsessed with 951"s
