Well, I've been looking for a couple weeks and this was the best example thus far...can anyone point me in the direction of a decent 944 Turbo (preferably grey or black...not red)? I really don't care if it has engine problems, just really want a solid body and decent paint, planning to convert to an EV. Reason for the turbo is the gearing ratio and strength of the tranny, as well as I like the look of the front bumper better.

So a bonus to the finder would be the engine/turbo for cheap if you want it

If you don't want the engine.... Wait around long enough and someone will have a timing belt problem that chunks the engine. I am sure you can get a really nice example for much less.

Some additional info on the car for sale...asked these questions after reading the "buyers guid" on pelican parts:

- Can you pass along the maintenance records you have?---I will get copies from my mechanic
- Do you have a key for the alarm system (key hole behind the front door)?---no key for the alarm system
- Does the rear hatch or sunroof leak at all?---small leak during VERY heavy rain. I have replaced the entire hatch seal
- Does the sunroof work? Is it power or manual?---sunroof works, it is power
- Any leaks from the various fluids (oil, antifreeze, brakes, tranny, etc.)?--- only leak is a SMALL oil drip
- Does the car have power steering? Does it work? Any leaks?--power steering, no leaks
- What options does the car have (power windows, power locks, power seats, etc.)? Do they all work?--power windows, seats...all work
- Do the struts for the hood and rear hatch work good?---hood struts work, rear hatch is weak
- Do the wheels have locks on them? Do you have the key?---locked wheels and i have the key
- Is the tool kit/jack/air pump/spare tire still in the trunk?---have the spare and jack, after market pump, no tool kit
- Does the car shake at all while driving?-- car does not shake
- Does the AC work?---AC blows, needs charged

If I were to make an offer, would $4k be fair? Or does this really look like a car I should run from (if so, what's the huge no-no, the rust?)?

Rust is not a good thing on these cars, I would walk away just because of that. You have to do something pretty bad to get them to rust (usually body damage without proper repair).

The rust scares me more than anything he could tell you about the car. It was been damaged and the repair is not good. I would not buy that car. Keep looking.

These cars came with galvinized bodies from the factory and were very rust resistant. I'd run from this car.

Sounds promising...I'm actually going to be in Cola this coming Friday, maybe I could come by and take a look at what you have? I left you a voicemail with my number, give me a call back when you get a chance.

Brian, I need to make a trip to visit you some time.

Maybe with an empty trailer...

I live in Florence, SC and have been thinking about selling my 88 turbo S, in the pic. I'm the 3rd owner for the last 12 years. about 97K miles currently. Had 47k when I bought it. I have been thinking of taking it down to autometrics for some servicing and to let them sell it for me. I want a 996 turbo! It may be more than you wanna spend though if you are looking at 5K cars.

What Doug said, just run. I'd recommend waiting for something better, or lean towards purchasing one from a member. Sometimes for that kind of money you can find something with a few mods that has been well taken care of; at least better than that car was.
That one looks to be worth somewhere in the mid-3's. I love these cares but they're not the easiest to nurse back to health.
Good luck
