Default Fuel Level Sender Questions

Hi All,

My fuel gauge has been showing empty and occasionally pops up to where it should be.

I measure the resistance of the sender unit and it is 73 ohms. That means empty and the tank is nearly full.

Two questions.

Without tool 9190 how have people removed that plastic nut? I am thinking of getting a 3.5 inch ID piece of PVC and cutting notches in it. I have tried other methods and cannot get it off.

Next up, it seems the sending unit can generally be cleaned up and then it works. Has anyone had expierience with that or am I looking at a new fuel send unit? What is the probability of sucess with just cleaning it?

Any suggestions for the fuel sender issue?

Do you happen to know the ohm range for the 944 sender unit for a full to empty tank?

Thanks
Shannon

I made up this adaptor from 3" pipe, as always with pvc pipe it is actually larger than specified 3", ID is 3.5". Adaptor is about 4" tall.
Had to cut some of the prongs off to clear the fuel outlet pipes when turning it. 2 slots cut into top (bottom of pic) to allow an inverted 1/2" breaker bar to be used to turn the adaptor. Looks scruffy but worked a treat.

That was what I was thinking of doing.

About 73 ohms when empty, 3 ohms when full.

Clarks garage has the exact specs.

The guy at the wrecking yard used a big punch and hammer to get the one I bought out of a car. (My previous one had cracked where the pipes were welded.) It seemed like a good trick so I have repeated it the couple of times I needed to remove or tighten the plastic nut.

Made something like picture 3. Worked well.

Cleaned the thing out, and I get 73ohms out of the car. Turn it over and I get 3ohms.

Put it back in the car and I get 73 ohms.

It seems the float isn't going up. I am wondering if there is something that I am not seeing. May the float leaks? I can't see in the tube well.

Pull the small nut off the bottom of the sender. The bottom plastic piece comes off and the tube does too. I'll post a pic once the camera charges up enough.
