Default rebuild or...

wondering if I should rebuild my 89 305,000 mile 2.5 or just move on.
budget is about 15 to 20k. 996's are inexpensive but i could have a 3 liter engine built and my guess is that would out perform a n/a 996. also the inexpensive 996s are high mileage, 60k which is alot for that 3.4 rms issue plagued motor. i also enjoy the cargo space of the 951, mine is in decent shape but that engine is getting tired. everything else is good susp, brakes, clutch...

What percentage of 996's have had rear main seal issues?

305,000 miles. WOW. That is awesome. What did you do to get it to last that long?

LS1 in a 951? not feeling that at all, just my opinion. i know plenty of folks that have done it, but it just seems, well, wrong to me.. something akin to putting a ford in a chevy i guess..

keep it porsche and rebuild

there are a couple of built engines on ebay ready to drop in supposedly, not familiar with the vendor though, but both are under 15k. one is 2.5 at $5,200 and the other is a 3.0 at $11,500 or so..

just my .02

+1 !!

You could easily go 3.0 and a top of the line turbo, exhaust, and some head and cam upgrades all of which would greatly out perform a 996 NA and give a 996TT one hell of a run.

Of course if some of the $15-20K is for suspension, body, wheels ,etc. then a different story.

I was going to go with them, but I got a good deal and lucky timing on a slightly used 2.8.
