The place to look is the ‘overlap’ between the main journal and the rod journal – on a 3.0 crank there is very little overlap.

1st pic is a 3.0 and the 2nd is a 2.5 – look at the rod to main journal relationship……once you see it you can tell them apart at 20’

Another trade secret from 944 Enhancement!

Thom, is that a fact? 2.5 kgs is a ton of weight difference. Amazing. Wonder if this was designed to assist the 968 spin to higher rpms, guess so? Anyone got pics of the 2 different 3L cranks?

I weighed my 968 crank at 25.0 kg while I found people weighing their S2 crank at a rather consistent ~27.5 kg so yes I think it is correct. At least until people come up with different figures?

I'll receive a 968 crank next week and will weigh it to confirm this. Probably the same crank the OP was interested in actually...

For my 3L engine, what would be the first mod to the crank to make it better without starting to cost to much money or should I just balance it and be happy?

Also, what flywheel is good to use with this crank? Is there a specific to the 968?

/Peter

I dont have a head, block, pistons, turbo or the motivation to get stuck into a 3.0 build at the moment, hope it works out for you.

But you got to start somewhere

I would have snatched the block also if it wasn't the small fact that one cyl was bored out and sleeved with iron and the rest honed alusil with crossmarks...

Now I've got a block, crank, 2,7 head, turbo and if I want to use rarst rods but will probably go for Wössner rods and pistons to be safe.

So will modding the crank give me any real world benefits?

Very true, if I find a 2.7 engine with good bores that will be my start point, there's usually an S2 crank and forged turbo rods available.

No disrespect to the seller but I was a bit wary about buying it unseen/measured, was a great price though.

Looks like I have a 2.7 engine, out of an auto which may have had an easier life. An S2 crank is next on my list, plus early forged turbo rods would be a good find, just leaving aftermarket pistons depending on condition of the bores. Hopefully this will be a budget build, it's for a road car and the main motivation is improving response from 2k, anything over 350 bhp/ft.lbs would be a bonus. Just want to check that the S2 crank with original forged turbo rods have clearance in the 2.7 block , I believe it's the 2.5 block that needs machining or aftermarket rods ?.
