It is very obvious and cannot be missed.
However, if it is missing - you will feel the shoulder and groove where it is secured by a snap-ring within the waterpump opening.
BTW, Without a thermostat your car should actually run cooler.

The reason is because without the restriction of the thermostat in-line, the water flows to fast through the radiator to effectively transfer heat.

Without a T-stat some of the water will cycle back through the block w/out going to the radiator.
When the T-stat opens it plugs the recirculation hole. If you remove the T-stat you HAVE to plug that hole or you will not get adequate cooling.I suspect that is your problem.

Thanks for your replies... i purchased the new thermostst and snap ring and have popped em in.. This was most definately my "running hot" problem. now the car heats up to just over the second white line ( above bottom) quite quickly.. and stays around there..fans also cycle on and off and at full speed cool the engine down from middle to second in about 10 seconds now, instead of 2 minutes.
havent tried it in very hot weather but its going to be 35c tomorrow so the test with air con on, awaits.
Just need to bleed a little more as some air is still inside.
Thanks again!

hope i did it right then got my snapring tool bent to 90 degrees, went in from top so that the bottom end of snap ring went all the way in. took pliers out went underneath grabed a long screwdriver and tapped in the top end of the snap ring until flush... not sure if i have done it right but its in and working a treat.. stop go traffic in 32c today for about 30 mins and not a hitch! wahhoo <img border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" title="" src="graemlins/drink.gif" />
