Hold on. I think I can do better than that:

Sorry - accidentally went to Quick Reply even though I was told not to!

I thought I could get a photo to appear right in the text message area, not just a URL. piston damage
I'm a rookie at this digital photo thing. Come to think of it, I'm also a rookie at engine removal! But I'm learning fast.

I guess I should add the crank case vent to the diagram as well

that looks bad. if you already have 100.5 cylinders then the only thing remaining is to sleeve teh block.

That's not the ONLY thing Herr K.; took the block to the machinist this afternoon, he thinks it'll only take a couple of thousandths of removal to make things perfect, then I buy some custom pistons from J&E for a grand or so and I am back in the saddle.

lets just say lindsey racing is building me a whole new bottom end.... there's enough oil smoke blowing out the back of my car to hide a large portion (at least half i'd say) of the russian army, and i don't think its just rings.... oh well, chance to upgrade (2.8L) and i've learned a TON tearing this thing apart, i used to be so intimidated working on my 951 now i am rather confident... only thing i'm having someone do is pull the motor for/with me, since i don't have a crane nor large enough garage space (we did the head, only to find out that wasn't the only problem upon firing it up).

Found some NEW info today. My tech and I were taking the valves out of the head, and he was stunned to discover valve guide #4 just fall out. As I understand it, the guides are pressed in, as in machine pressed. Plus, there's a small chunk of head gone from the lip around the hole that the valve stem passes through. We believe it's that missing chunk that got into cylinder #4 and caused the scoring damage.

2+ years ago, while I was replacing the head gasket, I took the head to a local shop for freshening and mild porting. My Porsche tech saw several things he said were done improperly on this head. So let that be a lesson to you all:

Make sure your machinist has a clue!

keep us informed about the rebuild, good luck on it, and now you need to look into the bottom of the motor for metal shavings and debris, dont forget to flush out the oil galleys and plugs the block has in it for lost debris, you do not want to go thru this after 2000 miles again from a lost metal fragment that got reawakened from a bad flush job, keep the faith

I believe that you have to be a Rennlist member to post pictures to the forum. I am not positive about this, but I remember reading it somewhere.

p.s. That piston looks fine to me, just hit it with an angle grinder to knock the burrs off and put it back in. If the cylinders are a little bit too big, just get some bigger rings. It'll run fine..................................hehe j/k
