IIRC(it was awhile ago) I took the whole boxes out from under the car, then drilled the threads from behind. I seem to remember strugging with the passenger side mounting--but I do remember pulling the entire assembly out(lens and box).

You can indeed get the boxes out from behind. However, in my case, I found that every single screw head was either stripped out or just snapped off with the slightest bit of pressure. I think that I had to drill the heads off of only 2 of 8. After that, I could pull the lights out and get the boxes out from the front. Then I had the equivalent of 8 rusty studs sticking out of 8 threaded inserts.
