Stage 8 CV bolts
#16
I agree....I've owned and beat the crap out of my racecar for the last six years and change transmissions from a S2 box to a turbo box for different tracks a couple of times a year...have yet to have a CV bolt come loose. The torque wrench is your friend. Checking CV bolts is part of a pre-track ritual just as brakepads, fresh oil, suspension bolts, etc. I think these locking bolts are more trouble than they are worth, but that's just me.

I'll throw another recommendation in for the OEM bolts. Porsche designed them with the concept of "stretch torque" in mind, thats why they are listed as a single use item. They are VERY effective at what they do and I have never seen a new one back out, only used ones. They weren't designed for 400rwhp either, tho.
I am guessing you'll have a bunch of fun trying to remove a Grade 8 bolt if the head rounds off as well.

One thing I *did* learn - get a GOOD socket. I bought a Snap-On. The first socket I had I got from Autozone, which worked, but was not a very good fit. I can see it being possible to strip out the head. Once I got my Snap-On socket, the fit was very snug, worked great.

I had them backing out all the time at the track, even on first use. I switched to 12.9 allen heads from mcmaster carr, use a lock washer (star type) and have never looked back. Bolts are $10 for a box of 25

Have them and like them. Paying the Porsche price for single use bolts got old very fast, add to that the ****ty design of triple star and I was happy to switch to something else.

While I never had the factory-type bolts loosen much in my 10 years of tracking the car (I'm religious about checking them before each event), I got tired of having to be so careful getting the triple square bit seated and lined up just right to keep from stripping the head. I also had some aftermarket bolts stretch so they wouldn't torque.
I think my box of 100 bolts cost me $25.

I have had the CV bolts back out on some cars – a lot of it depends on how well the previous owner or his/her mechanic treated the car. Its getting more and more common to find worn threaded holes on these cars. I had a car last year that I took great care in assembling since it was a 3.0 turbo that was going to see track time. Cleaned the flanges, used new bolts and set to factory torque….many of them backed out! I was going to use the stage 8 fasteners on his car but we used stronger axles and the clips would not work.
As these cars get older I am more and more tempted to locktite everything….but that would just **** off the next guy that has to wrench on the car!
BTW – I too had to shorten the stage 8 bolts on the wheel side of the axle.
