944 Turbo or 911SC
I am new to the Rennlist but not new to Porsche stuff. I have a general question for everyone out there. I would like to get a Porsche for DE/track/autocross use. I currently have a 2000 Boxster that I will be selling. I don't want to take it on the track and ball it up. So I would like to get another Porsche. Which is better, a 911SC or a 944 Turbo? Any feedback would be great.

The Lone Star Region had a PCA Club Race at Texas World Speedway this weekend. In the green run group feature race on Saturday, I watched a 944 Turbo "spank" the field and finish not only first in class, but first in the race. A 911 came in second, followed by another 944 Turbo. So, first through third saw the 951 taking two places. The most interesting part of all this was the sheer amount of money the 911 crowd had spent to come out and play - only to get beat by a lowly 951 at roughly half the cost.
IMHO, the 951 will give you a lot more bang for the buck - and a big grin every time you wax a 911.

Now, having said that. I'd love to have a 911, but not to race. I think they have classic lines and would look mighty fine sitting next to the 951 in the garage.

I have had a 911sc and am now on my second 944t. A 911 will beat a 944t on a AX track, my 944 n/a is faster also! Other than that put some money in a 944t and you can have a car that will be able to run with about anything. Plus cold AC, modern interior, ect..
I purchased the 944t's with the intention of modifying the cars to the max. Not a daily driver!
I think stock for stock they are pretty close with the 911 being the true sports car/944t a grand touring car. Decide the true usage, then drive them both. What about a turbo S? Paul

Before I stuffed it into a tree I had a 993, but am now driving an 88 944 turbo S. The 944 turbo S makes for a great mixed use car, although the turbo lag may hurt autox performance. But on an open track it'll spank a 911SC and easily run with a 3.6l 911.
I'll buy another 993, but for a track car I think I'll stick with the 944. Sooner than that I'll need to decide whether to keep this 944 turbo S stock or sell it and move to a track-prepped car, and you may also want to consider what level of preparation you want - it's almost always better to buy someone else's project...

For DE/track/Autox use I'd consider a 944S2 before a 944 turbo. It will work better in autox and be more reliable on the track. I have a friend who put 15,000 track miles on his S2 without a problem. Turbos tend to blow head gaskets, or just plain blow. The S2 will also be quicker than a 911SC on the track, will be much easier to drive, and much cheaper to maintain.
