Red face How much smoke is too much???

The 951 has been resting lately. I am a little scared to drive it. When I start it up it smokes for a split second. I have no idea how to diagnose this. I know that it is oil smoke. But I don't know whether it comes from the turbo or guides. How can I look into this?

If it is the turbo what all is involved in taking it out. Has anyone used majestic to rebuild a turbo is it worth it.

Am I over reacting?

The car still builds boost fine and only burns a quart or two of oil every 3,000 mi. Any suggestions?

Sorry for the long post. <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" />

If it's a puff on start-up and then it clears, it's probably guides. Good boost and 2 quarts per 3K miles is fine...

Would bad guides cause the compression to be low? The motor still has good compression.

What colour is the smoke:

Here's a couple of colours any car can see:

1. Black = fuel smoke - too rich
2. Light Blue Haze/white - oil smoke from turbo that you'll see when you floor it with an older turbo - no big deal though
3. White like fog - coolant going through engine?? - can't see behind the car. This rarely happens and if it does it could be expensive.

What the car first starts up cold, the fuel delivery system pumps in a burst of fuel for something for the ignition to blow up. This can cause a puff or two of black smoke but not much - I've seen it on a few race cars.

I dbout it's the turbo because they don't usually blow oil through the engine unless the RPM is high or they're really blown right good.

Certainly could be valve guides - that's common on high mile cars, especially at startup....

How many miles on the car? And guardsred951s is correct, bad turbo seals would manifest as smoking under boost (been there, done that).

164,000 mi.

I suppose that I knew that bad guides wouldn't hurt the compression any. Bacause compression is a function of the piston rings and how well the walves close.

Ok so if the valve guide seals are leaking who does good headwork? How much?

Hello Kool

I was experiencing the large puffs of white smoke with every press of the throttle. I had called ProTech and asked Frank what would be the signs of a blown head gasket. Obviously, it was as I had feared. I took my car to ProTech. He had determined after driving it, it was either a bad valve guide or a blown headgasket. Either way the head was coming off. It was a hole the size of a dime in the headgasket between Cylinder 1 and 2. As far as headwork, check out Lindsey Racing's site. If you are looking for just your standard valve job, they have it for around 500. Then it goes up from there. There is a race shop that I recently found out about from some of the guys in the local Porsche club. It is here in Simpsonville. It is called Stone Performance. I was looking for somewhere to do some powdercoating, Ceramic and Thermal resistance coating and was directed there. They are a full race engine shop and the do valve jobs, porting and polishing, etc. There prices are pretty reasonable. As far as the labor is concerned from ProTech, I was quoted 12 hours labor for a headgasket replacement. If you have some cash, there is alot you can do once the head is off. I have gotten alot of help and advice from Dave and Mike Lindsey and Tim from Speed Force Racing.

If you took it ProTech, they should be able to diagnos the problem for you at least. I too was scared to drive my car. I finally got it out and rolling and my gasket finally let go. Which isn't bad for an 16-17 year old headgasket that had never been replaced before.

Anyhow, good luck. I will be seeing you around the boards. BTW, you mentioned that you work for a BMW supplier? That is pretty cool, "No pun intended", I have been working at BMW for the past couple of years now. Small world. As far as turbo rebuilds are concerned, I just happen to see on Linsey's site, where they are now rebuilding turbos. I think somewhere in the neighbor of $300 to $500.

Hey AC

Have we talked before? I want to ask Frank about the car. But I bug him all of the time with stupid little questions and never do anything. Once I get done paying for my wedding stuff I will look into having the head redone. I really want to rebuild the motor. Just pull it out and do it. Maybe I will I will have to see what I decide.

Where in Simpsonville are you? I live off of Fairview. I have been to one PCA meeting and will be an official member very soon.
