Here in California, they passed the law about smoking in 'public' places, but there are still plenty of pubs that allow it. I heard there's a new bill pending that'll make the smoking limit 50-feet away from a 'public' building as well....
BTW- just because you're opposed to war does not make one unpatriotic. I know plenty of people in the military who's opposed to it, yet they're still serving their country (some for several decades already). One guy who was in WWI and WWII is vehemently against it, saying there are major idiological and moral differences between those and this upcoming one.
There's talk of a draft, I think the crunchy granola, bark-eating tree-hugging vegans should be the first ones picked!

and yeah burn the greenies and the scientists too before they undermine the american psyche with dangerous knowledge, jesus the christians have tried it a few times throughout history so why the hell not.
And yeah, I respect your "give a **** about the next generation" opinion too.

Like everyone, I have my own opinions about this war and terrorism stuff and everyone here has put forth some great points. I'm glad to be a member of this community - there's more than just 951 owners here!
On another note, I'm glad Canada hasn't taken the stance el-presidente has in terms of an offensive on Iraq. That said, we have commited to sending some of our troops overseas when things get ugly. In fact, I think there's already some over there! It's good to know we can work together to fix this problem

ELLISSUU,
I'm mature enough to care about something other than

"What else are they going to do feed all their oil to camels?"
This is the ultimate in arrogance, ignorance, and disrespect for the human race! Pathetic!!
"It's my own damn money, I earned it, and I'll spend it however the hell I want to! If I want a big SUV then so be it."
This scores pretty well too! Look, there is a fundamental principle of right and wrong. Consuming more fossil fuel than required is wrong because it increases our reliance on arab countries and creates irreversible damage to our climate. Also, we talk about 'rights' and 'freedoms' a lot, but we ignore the notion of 'responsibility'. Whether we accept our individual responsibility as worldwide polluters is entirely up to every one of us. Saddam is one dangerous maniac, but our hands aren't clean either!
Speaking of Hussein and Bin Laden, both of them are american creations. Hussein was armed and supported by Washington during his invasion of Iran, in which chemical weapons were used. The invasion of Iran is now used as a war pretext against Hussein. Go figure! Bin Laden was also armed by the US in the 1970s as leader of anti-Soviet Mujahaideen. Again, our hands aren't as clean as we like to think they are!
Finally, about this throwing planes into building business, I can't think of a more cowardly thing to do. This said, Washington knew all about the genocide in Rwanda and made a decision not to intervene. A million human beings died. What's worse? Throwing planes in buildings or voluntarily letting hundreds of thousands of people dye?
My point is, this issue isn't as simplistic as we'd like it to be!
Regards,
Chris

ELISSU why are you accusing Osama of being an enviromental terrorist? Have you seen him doing the shopping around your way in a SUV? If so you should probably call the FBI. (-:
Blatently obvious explanation - When you put an adjective and a noun together it can actually have a different meaning to the noun stand alone.
ELLISSU your attitude of disregard for the global environment that you share with others upsets me, but I am sure that you are a nice person.
You say that you consider the opinions of others
but to me it sounds like unless there is a 'me' or 'my' in the sentence it goes in one ear and out the other.
You can laugh about the issue, but many many more people will die through environmental change induced famine, war and natural events than in other recent tragidies. Hopefully you wern't laughing on S 11. I centainly wasn't, and I am not laughing about the poeple that will suffer so that people may excersise their constitutional right to consume as much fossil fuel as they want, cause they were lucky enough to be born in the USA.
This could be allieviated if enough 'consumers' put their egos aside and develop a level of environmental consciouness.

ELLSSUU, interesting theory. For the record, Saddam did gas up Kurds in Northern Iraq. This happened in the 1980s at a time when Saddam was an american 'friend'.
No question. Hussein's regime is violent, monstruous, and inhumane. This said, we can not impose democracy on the Iraqi people. History has clearly demonstrated that change happens in time, from within. We do not have the moral authority to dictate their destiny. Besides, we tried to stabilize Afghanistan and all current accounts show that Karzai has little control outside Kabul. Not exactly successful.
The Westphalia Treaty, entered in by the US, establishes the concept of state sovereignty where "war is justified only by aggression across a national border". Regime change as military objective or war pretext is against international law. And the American Constitution states that all agreements entered in by the US carry the force of law. Going in Iraq to overthrow Saddam is, therefore, unconstitutional.
ELLSSUU, why are you convinced war in Iraq is justified? I'm dying to understand why!

Chris
