This probably is kind of a long post, but I have a lot of questions for my car to make it "Smoother". First, my right front wheel bottoms or rubs against my fender. I have 225/55zr16 on front. The car has been lowered (Looking under it tomarrow to see with what?). Think the shocks are bad? My car is an 86.....do they have a "hard" shifter. The tranny feels more like a 915 in a 911 than a smoother one i felt in an 87 951. Could the bushing be bad in the shifter? Short shift kit a good idea. MOST IMPORTANT! why the hell do i keep throwing power steering belts? my mechanic says i must have "hit" something on the bolt that holds or tensions the belt down. I havent hit a darn thing!!. I appreciate the help. The nagging little things are pissing me off....making me almost want to sell it. It runs like a bad out of hell, but i dont know??

not sure about the other stuff but for about $50, you can get a gallon of swepco, and change your gear oil, that solved the rough/grinding from 1-2 in my 83... with 20,000 on it and 18 year old gear oil. give it a shot, good luck with the other stuff!

"225/55zr16"
That's the problem. You want to use a lower-profile 225/50-16 tire. The issue is with how much vertical clearance you have when you turn the wheel and the tire sticks out from under the fender. Hit a 2" bump and it rubs. A taller tire or lowering the car will give you even less clearance.
As for the shifter, try changing the oil in the tranny.

On sixteens, popular setup seems to be 205/55 up front and 245/45 out back. I'm on this setup with a set of Design 90s from a '91 Carrera2. 16X8 and 16X6 PO also set it with 1 degree front and back 1.5 degree negative camber. I've enjoyed the "grab" and it is still very streetable (attention getter on grooved highway).
I've thought about lowering so I'd also be interested to know if the shorter tire solves it or if your shocks are soft? I'm on new Konis now. I may drop it this winter 1.5" front and 0.75" rear.
you didn't mention the wheel width? if you're rubbing, I'm guessing 7"? if a shorter tire, new shocks, and/or some negative camber don't do the trick...you may consider rolling the fenders.
