My cousin has started modifying his L98 and when i was stock, I use to beat him in second, third, so on. he has a straight through exhaust, low temp thermostat, 58 mm throttle body pulleys. I raced him, we are about equal. BUt now, he's port matching the manifold, and has just ordered headers. I think i'm going to lose! help. What should I do? Thanks

I was thinking about getting that new map sensor kit from danno, but i have to wait a little longer for that. I think that would help. He claims 165+ mph top speed.
I think i'll be equal if not faster with just that. I'll let you guys know. Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

APE, Steve "R" or "Danno" chips,
New wastegate w/manual controller set to 15psi
test pipe and cat back exhaust......make it stainless exhaust too so he can see how nice it looks from behind

I remember i raced my buddies LS1,Supercharged,ohh that was a sad day for the 951,I think ill need a supra twin turbo or a viper now,he took away my pride with that one.Bad memorys, bad bad memorys.
just upgrade everytime he upgrades youll be fine
Or you can save your money and do a standalone/turbo upgrade, thats fun

Heh, heh... I'm working on some dyno-comparisons between the dyno-run we did yesterday with the one we did last month. Primary difference being our chips vs. the EuroProducts/APE ones we used earlier.... get this... we picked up 50lb-ft of torque!!! Yes that's right, that's a full 100lb-ft over stock at the same 15psi of boost! Will have the charts up overnight...

Danno,,,so your making some good progress with your "custom" chips? That's good news for all of us!!! Maybe I'll offer up my car for a set to test..!!heh heh oh..55# injectors?
And an LS1 with supercharger,,yes you will need mods more than above,,,but not to spank a L98

wow, this map sensor kit is really something. I think i'll keep saving up for it. considering the fact that his car is modified like crazy and mine just has a boost controller and chips, that's pretty sad that he has to do so much to beat a practically stock 951
If i had the same amount of money invested in my car, it'd be an animal!

Danno
It's not a surprise that you got more HP with ANYBODIES chips other than the APE chips... which are about the worst you can get. Every dyno I've seen with APE chips shows that the a/f was too rich to soon, and too lean up top....
As for the L98... this shouldn't be too much of a problem.... it just takes money :-)
Get a Bursche (spelling) test pipe w/o the cat.
Get a DeltaGate wastegate.
Get some HR chips and adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
Turn the boost up to 18psi after you get the thing tuned properly.
This is about the cheapest way to keep the L98 in line.
After that, any larger turbo will ensure you maintain superiority

my brother has an 85 corvette with headers, borla exaust, no cat, adj. fpr, and k&n panel filter. his best time has been a 13.34 at maple grove. ive raced him several times and gotten beat badly. if we could go from 40 mph to 130 i think i would take him. not in the quarter mile. if thats not bad enough my other friend runs a 12.2 in his twin turbo supra with nos, and my other friend just got an rx-7 twin turbo. he hasnt raced yet but im not going against him.

I've owned a couple of L98 cars in the past, none of them stock...
I've also raced many Corvettes, IROCS, Z28, SS Z28s, GT Mustangs, and blown Saleen Mustangs.
I've NEVER been beaten by one. In fact I've never had one that was within 3 car lengths.
It's not to say that it can't be done.. It can for sure.. but it will take A LOT MORE than an exhaust system and a larger throttle body. It will take a good set of aftermarket heads like AFR etc.., good true dual exhaust system, larger cam, injectors, major intake manifold work (probably at least a SuperRam setup, as the stock length runners, even larger diameter runners, dump the HP past 4800 rpms), etc.... Basically the WHOLE MOTOR with the exception of the short block.
I just recently raced a new SS Z28 with NOS. I pulled him every time from about 70mph up to 120mph+ until I let off the gas (3 races).
A stock engined 944 turbo can with bolt-ons, be made to slap a L98 silly. He may get a car length or so off the line, but after that, it's over...
