Stand alone engine management
Anybody here have experience with any of the stand alone systems such as Electromotive, SDS, DTA, Autronic, Motec, etc.
I am curious to know about the advantages and disadvantages of each system and their reliability.
I have experienced the Motec system and know that it is probably the best, but it is a bit more than I would like to spend. TIA

Check out the threads posted by the guys who've actually installed and used the SDS system:

The Tec3 is an interesting system. Mine is installed in a track only car. I think that made it a bit easier. No AC or idle air stuff to get in the way.
Each day I learn a bit more about the system and my engine. I'd say it's important to check out support for whatever system you plan to get. Choose wisely on that point and you'll be happy with your choice. The best system in the world and no support won't get you too far. Although I suppose Danno could figure out most.
I've found the tech support, Fred, at electromotive to be both helpful and patient with my questions.

the easiest and cheapst is the SDS and need NO Lap top.
the best bang for your money is the DTA or the Autronic (made by ex Motec guys). They come with all sensors cables software etc and cost about $1300. they even have a boost controler etc. Autronic has teh auto tune whgich can set up the engine in 20 Min using a wide band sensor.

It would seem that everyone is looking to enter into the aftermarket EM market. I was talking with Dave Lindsey last week about various subjects and one of them was Engine Management. I have been leaning towards a Tec3 but Dave had mentioned a company that I had not heard of; EFI Systems. I decided to call them up and have a conversation. First of all, the system is not available yet and will most likely not be completed until winter. What was interesting about was the cost. $1195 with the ability to use the stock wiring harness and stock sensors! (although a new TPS is highly recommended) No crank trigger is required. It will support either a MAF system, MAP sensor, or both. It has interesting capabilities around RPM and gear specific boost management partnered with air/fuel. You can use the stock coil are go to a direct fire setup. EM Control and logging is a Windows based laptop. The hardware is complete but he is having some development delays in the Windows program. Anyways, just an FYI for something new to look at.

One system that seems to be missing here is the Haltech E6K. I have one (not installed) and friend just installed one on his RX7. It does everything that the SDS system does and more for less money. I really think it's a superior system that is comparable to the TEC 3. I paid $2000 Australian for my unit (about $1800 Canadian or $1100 US). It has full control of everything - even simple boost control with a solenoid. They are widely used by guys in every circle except for this list it seems. The best part of the system is the datalogging which is a must to get good fuel/ignition maps. I really like the guys at SDS because they are locals and helpful but their system is not as robust as the TEC, Motec or Haltech units. Go to http://www.hitman.hm/ to learn more about the system. You can buy the Haltech in the US for about $1500 with the fully terminated wiring loom and all the sensors. We saved a bit by ordering from Australia. It only took 3 days to get here! E-Mail me if you want to know where we got it from.

My invoice for the SDS computer (for MSD), wiring harness and sensors, afr meter, trim **** and hand held lcd programer was $1169.00 US. I probably spent another $350.00 on MBC, intake, sensor bracket. Thats it.
By the way, talked to the guy at EFI systems over a year ago and while it sounds awesome in terms of ease of installation, it was going to be availible LAST winter, so don't hold your breath.
