Default speedo swap?

I have 944 Turbo S, US spec car but I live in Europe. I want to swap the speedo with the euro one (300 km/h), for various reasons. Finally I got one - it was damn hard to buy it here for reasonable price - it comes from S2. But now I started to wonder - is it just a simple swap? I want to swap the speedo only , leave rest of the cluster untouched. Can somebody advice - will it work? I believe that speed signal comes from the sensor (analog pulse) then it is processed inside the 'speedo part' (clock with electronics) to give the needle and mileage reading, it has nothing to do with the rest of the cluster? In this case it makes no difference if it sits inside US cluster or euro cluster to work properly. Am I right?

It should work fine.

I'm using an entire 968 cluster in an 86 951, and everything works correctly. Actually the speedometer is more accurate at lower speeds, than the original.

Good to hear that as I just realised 951 and S2 have different final gear ratios... If the speed discrepancy is significant against GPS measure I think I will just swap the faceplate and odometer part to have km readings instead of miles in my original speedo.

The 951's and S2 speedometer read from the output of the transaxle and 968 reads from the ABS system. In either case, drive ratios make no difference to the readings.

I thought all 951 read speed signal from pulse sender mounted in rear differential? I think same applies to S2? Don't know about 968...

951 should use the rear transaxle signal. 968 uses a signal from the ABS brain.

Ah, laps of memory. Yes, all 951 & S2 read from transaxle. 968 is from ABS. Either way, it should work without issue.

I'll edit so I don't confuse anyone.
