Default 3.0 engine build

hi Guys,
I am buying up parts to build a 3.0 turbo engine.

So far I have a 968 block with crank and a 2.7 head.

I have a few questions about the build that I was looking for advice on:

1) What balance shaft / housing do I need? Will this one work? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-94...item415fc64ea4

2) there was a set of JE 104.5 pistons with total rings for sale over here in UK. The compression ratio is 9:1. Is this too high?

3)Anyone got any second hand forged rods like pauter or carillos or pistons?

Thanks
Sandy

As far as i know balance shaft covers are matched to the block (numbers are stamped in the covers) I'm not sure how important it is to have the original covers.

Yes. The bearing races are line bored so they must be used with the same block.

why not just go new pistons and rods, instead of second hand ones?

Did the block come without the balancer shafts/covers ?.

You should use the balance shaft covers that came with the block, or align bore the replacements. I'd use the 968 or S2 shafts, since they are closer to right counter-weight for a 3 liter. I would not use JE pistons in an Alusil bore, regardless of compression ratio. Mahle pistons are a better choice as they are designed and coated to work in Alusil. For a mild 3 liter build, you might also consider 951 rods, which might be easier to find and can hold a fair amount of power.

I can get a set of forged 951 rods for £100 (I am in UK). What sort of power will these take?

My block just arrived by courier and it has the balance shaft already.

I am going to be using cast iron liners instead of alusil as one of the bores is damaged.

951 rods can take power, just wouldn't put to much rpm on them since they are heavy.
