Seperate Wastegate exhaust?
I'm thinknig of having an exhuast made at one of the Local shops here (thanks to NASCAR here in NC we have a lot of quality fabricators)....
Anywho, the plan is to run a 3 inch tube off the stock down pipe all the way back. And I can go two ways with this, one tie the wastegate in to that 3inch pipe, or just have it vented through its own pipe out the side of the car. My question is. Who has made a wastegate only exhuast, and what sort of muffler could be used on it. I was thinking the muffler off the 930's wastegate could work well, but I'm just looking for ideas at this point in time.
Thanks all

I was planning the same thing without the muffler on the WG dump. I'm running a 3" open muffler, I don't think the WG will be much louder than the exhaust it's self.

I was planning on using a motorcycle slip on by an after market source. they are very cheap on ebay so i could buy several until i found one that sounded good and resell the rest. what do you guys think?

I think it'll be a lot louder than you think. At the last autocross I attended there was a talon turbo running an open wastegate and what happens is you get a real loud air woosh sound everytime the wastegate opened. It was very loud and will draw attention from everybody including mr. officer of the law. Just something to keep in mind.

Andy, I have that exact setup right now, and it is loud as hell. Easily the loudest street car I have ever heard when the WG is open. I like it though.

I have seen these on hondas and imports lately...if you look through some of those speciality mags at your local bookstore you will probably get a ton of ideas.
I do believe they are using motorcycle mufflers.

I try to stay out of full throttle or boost near cops anyway. When the car is done, If I did a full boost run around a cop(wether it's loud or not)I'd get pulled over. My girlfriend can stick her arm through my muffler(I can't, big hands)I don't think it'll be too quiet anyway.

Ian-
I don't muffle the WG outlet at all. I have a little screen over the wastegate outlet to keep out debris. I hardly ever open up the wastegate during daily driving. When I do, it is ridiculous. It scares the living **** out of people. On a quiet night, I think you could hear me a good 3 miles away. But, like I said, I am hardly ever opening the WG when normally driving. Eveyone at the AutoX loves it. I get lots of compliments on it.
I have run this setup with both the stock wastegate and a Tial 35mm. The stock WG sounds like a really loud Shhhhhhhhhh! The Tial unit sounds similar but with more engine sound to it, kinda like a fighter jet.

If I remember correctly, according to Corky Bell's 'Maximum Boost' an external wastegate should be 'smoothly' merged back into the primary exhaust stream, several feet down the stream. I remember him citing a 'significant' improvement in power (on a turbo race motor).
This is why I've been kind of resistant to buy an off-the-shelf test pipe. Most simply merge the wastegate in at an almost 90º angle, right away. The stock setup merges in nicely. I think Porsche engineers did their homework Here's what I mean...

Anyways, this is purely theorectical; have no data to back this up.

Most, if not all, full race cars built by Porsche were a seperate exit for the WG. I beleive that the factory 930 was seperate too. I want to have a little fun, and run mine out the passenger side. Anyone know any tips on the routing?

If you decide to route the WG exhaust to the passenger side, be careful!! The fuel lines are routed in the same area!!!
