Post Can I get a hand?

I have the settings for adjusting the timing/fuel with the KLR pot switch.

As that statement probably screams, I know just enough to get into trouble. I just had my motor rebuilt/replaced by eXotic Motorwerks here in Phoenix, and I am pretty happy with the work Dan did. I have had a few issues, but they have been good about handling them. Since I spent more on the work than I paid for the car, it really ought to be good service. (Plus i am sorta digging the P|mp sticker they gave me for my hatch!)

My current concern is the headers glowing fairly bright orange when I run the car 3/4ths, say to 5000RPM or so. I believe that this is an indication of a lean burn and so I want to try a +3% fuel setting to see of that improves the situation. I also intend to have the injectors cleaned and matched fairly soon, but since I leapt into this engine rebuild without even thinking (serious case of "while we are in there", think ramen noodles for 3 months) I need to try to richen the mixture on a budget.

Can I get some advice on the right way to do this? I know it was a fairly common topic a year or so ago, but I would prefer to have a least a semblance of conversation, so I can yell for help if I mess it up.

I would suggest giving Chris at Technodyne a call and scheduling some dyno time to see exactly what your air/fuel ratios look like. Also, do you have any mods on your car?

Heh, I need a budget solution, if I had the hundred bucks for dyno time, i would just take my injectors in to have them cleaned and flow matched. I have a stock engine, although my chips do not appear to be factory units. No clue what they are though, as they are not marked in any way. I got into this thing about $5800 more than I had intended when i 1st scheduled the service visit for seals. If I had known that I was going to spend $7000, I would have just called Anderson or Powerhaus and bought a complete motor and turbo. Or I would have eBay'd the whole thing and bought a 968. As it happened, I never even looked around, since it was already apart at Exotic.

[sidebar] I feel like for that amount of money, it should have been more engine, but I also understand that these are not inexpensive cars to work on. And I also understand caveat emptor.[/sidebar]

The engine runs strong, and Dan did tell me that I needed the injectors done. But I need the car as a daily driver, and I do like to occasionally put my foot in it. I figure rather than melting a piston, I could richen up the mixture a bit, maybe add a gallon of tolulene to increase the octane of the fuel and let the timing advance a bit. Again, my alligator mouth overruns my ***, but doesnt a higher octane fuel reduce detonation?

I am planning to get a dyno done, maybe around July. If I add the Guru setups at the same time, then I can get it all tuned up and happy-making at the same time. But until I recover from my episode of expulsive wallet syndrome, I gotta work smart, not hard.

Don't you guys sleep?

We should have checked your plugs this weekend. If I wasn't too busy screwing around and getting drunked up, I might have thought of that. Anyway, I've seen several different aftermarket chips and can probably identify what you have. I also have a set of stock 951 chips that you can throw in to yours get a good baseline.

I know a few tricks that should allow us to figure out what is going on with your car, and correct the a/f meter to get you in the right range. I've also seen over rich conditions cause something similar so it could be as simple as a bad o2 sensor. By changing the KLR settings, you'd just be hiding the problem which could come around to bite you in the long run.

Besides, it's a good excuse to have a few drink.....

BTW, what were your thoughts on the go carts this weekend (Friday)? I know a few guys that want to go.

jeremy, how do i know if i have the a/f dialed right? reason is, it seem like my car is running way too rich, it sputters and hesitates a lot below 1.3+-.2 on the stock boost guage. after that it's fine, it also blows a lot of black smoke and clears up when boost kicks in, is this a sign of running rich or something else? i recently installed a a/f guage and it indicates i'm lean? which one is it?
about the air flow meter, how would someone know that it's adjusted properly?

And my flyweight *** just getting sillier and sillier. The car is running pretty well, but I am a bit skeered of it. I would just throw up if I toasted it.

I guess I keep it under 4000RPM until I get a few bucks saved up or I figure out the mix setting.

As far as go carts...I am gonna make you my bitch. I am gonna beat you so bad, you will give your drivers license back to the state, and get a bus card. I can see it now...

Me: What happened man?

You: I got some dirt in my eye.

Me: Through the visor?

You: It's my lie, let me tell it...

Carl,

I guess it could be a mixture of things. If a dyno is out of the question, I'd start by checking the plugs out. While it's not an exact science, it will give you a decent ballpark idea. Blowing black smoke tells me that your rich. The A/F gauge in my opinion is nothing but an idiot light (excuse the expression). I have one as well and only use it to give me a general idea and tell me when I get really lean. Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

Marc,

As funny as that is......that's it, no more Mike's Hard Lemonade for you. You must still have a buzz so you're cut off starting today. What drivers license?????? Are they required in this state? If you beat me on the cart, I'll give your four flats in the parking lot. Either way, you lose. Or I could have my wife show up, race for free (I have very little integrity so the bikini thing works), and she can beat you like a red headed step-child on the track. Technically, that would make you my bitches bitch.......Now how would that feel? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Errr...

I was going to write this really witty/urbane/cool response to that. Then I remembered that I have met your wife.

So with all respect to her...thats just fine with me. Just let her know I get a little weepy after the third or fourth spanking.

Have a great day man!

"I have a stock engine, although my chips do not appear to be factory units"

Be careful here! Not all aftermarket chips follow the same FQS +/-3%, +6% fuel and -2.77 ignition adjustments as stock. Some chips like the AutoThority as something like +/-12.5% and +25% fuel adjustments.

Also the initial black-smoke you see when getting on the throttle may be the built-in accelerator-pump enrichment which only lasts a fraction of a second. Then it's reduced and fuel-values are base upon the chips, which may be causing you to run lean enough to heat those headers up.

yeah, if you're leaning out around 5k i bet you have autothority chips, or similar, i had similar experiences w/ those, not a big fan.

don't cheap out and save $2-300 and blow up a 7k engine, either ride your bicycle, get a ride, or stretch your already hurting budget a little more, burning a valve will cost you more than 3 times a set of chips, not including labor which i assume you aren't up to doing your own head?
