Question Best Media For Cleaning Aluminum Engine/Suspension Parts

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good media for cleaning aluminum engine and suspension parts? I have used glass in the past which makes things look great but seems to change the surface a bit, and sand also looks decent but changes the surface a lot. I have heard about soda as well but apparently that leaves a residue? I just want to safely brighten up the aluminum bits but leave the original finish on them.

ya, jet wash, or hot tank, with special solution for aluminum, no more than 20 minutes. then rinse off with high pressure and good as new. with no abrasive in sight.

Aluminum oxidizes VERY quickly. Like almsot instantaneously, which is why you have to use acetone when you weld it, even after you wire brush it. Obviously, the oxide gets worse over time. If you want to preserve the look, you might think about powder coating it with clear when done.

My 968 had an oil leak from the balance shaft seal when I got it. Removing the varnish proved impossible with traditional means. I ended up getting some oven cleaner, and spring it down with that. Let it soak for an hour or so, and used a scotchbrite pad anywhere I could reach, adn a power washer where I couldn't. I was amazed at how well it worked.

You may also think about walnut shells if you are going to have it blasted.

Side note, hope things are well. You wouldn't recognize your old car any more

Walnut shells and soda work great without leaving a texture. Soda can leave a residue so its a good idea to soak parts after blasting. I have read that glass shouldnt be used with aluminum as the beads can embed themselves in the surface. Also if you are powdercoating you will need to degas for an longer time if you use chemicals due to the porous nature of aluminum.

I won't "recommend" this but I have used it to good effect before. If it's removable and small enough to be submersible, a couple of cans of crystal drank and ten gallons of water in a tub works wonders. Make sure you have a mask and rubber gloves and a ton of fresh air.
