Post Carbon hood

Would anyone be interested in a properly constructed cf hood for our cars? I am considering a run of hoods and want to know what the interest is and what people would be willing to pay for a real carbon hood made by a respected composites manufacturer. I have no info on weight at this time, but I imaging it would be a lot lighter than the cf offered by the current manufacturers, who only coat a glass hood with cf.

I would not be interested myself but if you are investigating make sure you ask the manufacturer what sort of gell coat/who knows what they can put on the surface so it will paint up nice and match the sheet metal appearance.

Getting the surface to look acceptable has been a common complaint.

I'm having preliminary email talks with a racecar parts builder and I haven't got enough info on details of construction to list a final price, but they said the first hood costs 2500 delivered, but I just sent an email with icesharks' comment and asking if they could make the part as a bolt on proposition with threaded inserts in place for the hinge and latch hardware, we'll see what they say and I'll keep you posted.

I got a reply which stated the weight of the hood will be between 5 and 7 pounds. The first hood would cost 2500 because of the mold construction cost. Volume sales after that bring the price down considerably, but I still am working on construction detail and surface finish before I can figure a price. The hood would be a bolt on piece with threaded inserts in place for hardware.

i'd be interested if the cost is comparable to the gt racing cf hood. i have my 951 on a diet right now and the hood is a huge potential savings.

btw, is anyone here running the gt racing cf hood? on the street? how is the fit/appearance/durability? the fiber images hoods the import guys have are very nice, even unpainted. how does this compare?

The cost would be higher than GT because this is a different product, they don't make a carbon hood...they make a fiberglass hood with a veneer of carbon for show. The hood I'm proposing would be half the claimed weight of a GT piece and of much higher quality. Have you ever looked at a GT hood up close? I doubt their weight claims based on my observation of their glass hoods.

I have a carbon fiber hood I was getting ready to sell if anyone is interested. I purchased it used and thought I might use it on my street car. The surface finish is not good enough to use on a street car with out a fair amount of work, but it is very light, perfect for a race car. The top surface is in primer. It weighs less than 10lbs and has the inner reinforcements like a stock hood and is made to mount like the original. I do not know who the manufacture is. I am asking $350.00 plus shipping. It is large enough that it needs to go truck freight. If someone is interested in purchase I can take some pictures.

I would be interested if I can't generate buyers for a run of new ones. Do the reinforcements have steel threaded inserts to bolt it on, or does it have to be mounted like a race hood with pins? email pics please.

There is a race shop here in St. Louis (Axis Racing-formula cars, carbon stuff for Dinan) that builds almost exclusively with carbon. He's built 7 lb. 951 hoods before for Garrity. I don't know about the stock inserts.
I'll ask him though. Seeing as he already as covered the capital investment for the mold, I'm sure they would be pretty reasonable pricewise.
