Carbon hood
#18
I still haven't spoken to the fabricator at Axis Power Racing yet. I've got a couple of voice mail messages left for him. I'll find out about, gel coat, threaded inserts and pricing. The hood I saw (the first one he ever did) was extremely light, but had a couple rough spots. The current pieces (Miata, BMW) I've seen are very smooth.

Dave E, maybe you should try to reach these guys in ST Louis, tell them what you want - because I'd be interested in 5-700 range. I plan on a re-paint this fall.....hmmm, wonder if we could get a carbon fiber tray that would duct air from the radiator fans up to the scoop, in the carbon fiber hood that looked like a 968 turbo RS?

GT Racing stuff in general requires a lot of work to make it look nice. Most of my car now has GT Racing fiberglass and I have spent hours and hours sanding and finishing to get everthing to look good.

Well,
I got hold of John at Axis and the threaded inserts are the way he builds them to begin with. He uses some kind of coating on the mold so that when the hoods come out they're glasslike. He does carbon repair work to other shops pieces and he knows about crappy finishes and how hard it is to make smooth. He can add recessed pin fastener points for those of you with racier applications.
Weight is between 7-8 lbs. Price is $1000 per hood. He can paint to match with a primer and color coat for $350. It's more than $700. but no finish or fabricating work required.

The manufacturer I am talking to wants to charge 1099.00 per hood coated in clear(PPG 2042 clear coat). I never asked about painting them to suit for us. I have a pic of some of their work in clear, but I can't figure out how to make it smaller than 180kb to upload it, any help?. I can email otherwise. They will provide hoods ready for paint, a sanded resin surface for 999. The key is always good mold construction and proper prep to the mold as Russ says. I think This price level is just what we can expect for real carbon parts, we have just become used to looking at GT's catalog and their prices, but as 951racer's post indicates, we get what we're willing to pay for.

If you have a PC go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Paint
Open up the pic, Edit > Select All.
Image > Stretch/Skew... Change the Horizontal & Vertical to 75% or something then Save As jpeg.

awesome, that release cloth on the back means:
a) it's a wet layup
b) it was vacuum bagged
not pre-preg but i think for non-structural stuff like body panels, wet layup works great, and bagging is a must. looks awesome.
possible group buy rate? i'd be willing to pay 800 for comparable quality to say, fiber images, which are spectacular.
btw, has anyone tried to contact fiber images? if not i'd be willing to take the point on that approach.

I doubt I could get the price much lower unless we went to about 18 hoods. Let us know what you find out megatron, I'm only in this for a hood, I don't care who does the work as long as the hood is top quality.

I contacted Fiber Images and VIS and got a reponse from VIS.
<a href="http://www.visracing.com/" target="_blank">http://www.visracing.com/</a>
I talked to Pak at VIS. At the bottom of this mail is the e-mail correspondance leading up to this.
We need 25 people and to give them a hood to build the mold off of. It will then be in the ballpark of $400/ea for the hood after that. We can probably negoiated this if needed (higher price, lower numbers).
He tells me this includes a fiberglass structure, which they are now laying up at the same time as the CF skin, metal inserts and a hood latch.
VIS typically makes stuff for the sport compact crowd (what some people here call the "ricer" crowd), but I've seen their stuff and it's very good. People I've talked to in the sport compact crowd also highly praise these products.

Who's in for a "group buy" and who has a perfect hood they wish to donate to the cause (mine has a small fold in it above the shock tower area, so is no good for a mold).
