Looking for the names of some places that make good aftermarket exhaust systems for the 87 944
Turbo. I have been in touch with SFR and like what they have.

I'm also interested in aftermarket exhausts. I hear GHL motorsports good. They say that their headers reduce spool time by 750 RPM. An they have a video with a porsche with their exhaust system installed and it sounds great! It sounds very responsive. I must admit, they are a little on the expensive side.

I had a local shop do mine. Its a 3 in cat back and test pipe. Sounds great, looks beautiful and only cost me $300. Dont disregard your local fab. shops.

If you don't have a testpipe already do this upgrade first. I recommend the 3" Stainless varity as they don't rust. It made a world of difference on my 87 951. Maybe my cat was clogged?? Anyways the facts are it helped my car tremendously!! The turbo spooled so much quicker and the car felt more alive. Plus the 3" testpipe will bolt right up to the factory cat back system.

I was told by serveral people and GHL themselves that they quit making the headers because of fitment problems. I also heard by several tuners that there headers crack as well and are a pain to install.

GHL may be a little on the high side for cost but I have found them to be extremely responsive to problems. If I update to a new header I'd go for GHL. I used them on my 94 3.6 turbo.

They have a 3" turbo back, stainless steel, mandrel bent, which I use on my car for $800.

I plan on finding a local shop for my 86. I just bought my new Koni's for all 4 corners and when that's out of the way.. it's time for more performance.. THE FIRST thing to do IMHO is a more free-flowing exhaust, cause we (should) all know that "in a turbo, the best exhaust is no exhaust."

The only trouble I see with going local is that very few people have the capability of doing mandrel bends. A friend of mine, Z owner, found a shop in Austin I believe that can do it, and he paid ~300 for turbo back with test pipe. (not stainless)
I don't think getting a stainless pipe is the most important thing.. looks definately don't matter under the car to me and since the pipe on the car now is the original and it's 16 years old.. i think another 16 years is plenty of time for another non stainless pipe. i can put that money in a sweet muffler!

Danny951 if you find a local shop that you think will do a good job please post it. I am looking to upgrade myself and have been looking at ordering, but if a local shop can do a good job I live in the Dallas area and would be willing to take it in. If I find somewhere local I will post also.

One of the big things that I have not seen mentioned with the s.s. exhaust is the weight savings! My whole 3" SFR set weighs less than the factory muffler. The shipping tag on the box from SFR was 21 lbs. My factory muffler with the additional 3" split pipe on it weighs 23.5 lbs by itself. I don't have my cat back pipe anymore but I still have the cat, it weighs in at 22 lbs.

Alan c. did you have problems installing your ghl exhuast? And did you feel a big difference?

I did not notice a drastic gain from my B&B Carbon Fire Cat Back. Better spool, little more low end, but nothing to write home about. It does weigh 17lbs, and that is very nice.

However, the sound is just what I wanted. Not very loud at all over stock, no resonance, and a hell of a nice loud scream when you are in the boost. Does not sound rice at all. It is a very unique sound that is hard to explain. I have not heard anything like it. I lucked out and got this system from a lister for a great price.

I never had the chance to record some sound files for the board before the fire. I will snap some pix tomorrow evening for you. (battery is dead.. been shooting pics like crazy). New they are $1100 from B&B, they are custom made for you since they have gone away with the carbon fibre stuff.

Would anyone be willing to provide additional reviews of exhausts they've installed? I, too, am interested in the SFR, but then I also hear that the stock exhaust is pretty dern good already.

If I can spool earlier or pull harder to redline, I'm game for dropping some bills on an exhaust, if it's largely just a sound, I'd rather look at other modifications first.

FWIW, I'm running all stock except for FPR, manual boost control, and weltmeister chips.

So what exhausts have put smiles on faces?

I had a local exhaust place cut the old muffler off and put on a new straight-thru design. that along with a testpipe made the car pretty loud. but a nice loud. ive never heard a negative comment about it..while on boost under tunnels it sounds like my friends very modded 930. Very airy/turbowhiney. sounds like tons of air moving thru a tailpipe people behind me says its intimidating under full throttle.
I plan on going the SFR route or having a custom one made to get rid of the factory pipe and restrictions as soon as possible.
need to get my car back 1st!
