Sam,
That's exactly what I did to my 951 with no cat. We "spliced" in a Borla 16" Sporstmen stainless racing muffler.
It sounds kinda loud when idling, but when you really get on it (at the track ) it's not really that loud, but it is kinda airy/turbo sounding.

I really like my SFR 3" system. When I got my exhaust, I didn't have time to put the entire car on jack stands to change the entire exhaust so I did the cat back first,,great sound and I could hear the turbo sucking a little or the blow off valve recirculating(I have the KOKELN intake on my car, which moves the air meter and filter similar to MAF). When I put the 3" test pipe on, that sound was gone up front and more sound came out the back - less back pressure? I noticed quicker spool up times, especially in second and third. Also a touch more performance too.

With the weight savings, sound, and performance, I think it is worth the money. The exhaust on the 968 is very good. The exhaust on the 951 can be improved.

Now let me get the head, turbo, and injectors in next month.....then lets see how it runs and sounds!

I'm getting a 3 or 2 and 3/4 inch 'turbo-back' on monday at a local shop (in NC). I've been quoted $300, which includes all of the piping, and removal of my wastegate which is not only leaking but has virtually welded itself on...

I'm still shooting for $5000 trackworthy 944 turbo. With this my total investment will be around $3800, but I will still need a couple of interior pieces, that wastegate taken care of, and a roll bar, as well as harnesses, tires etc. I may not hit it, but hopefully it'll at least be close. Well, I think I may be loosing some coolant, definately loosing a crapload of oil (1 quart every 100 very hard driven miles, or about 1/4th a quart every softly driven 500 miles or so, they seem mostly external). If I only need a headgasket, that'll be great I can take care of it with the belts/hoses. Car might be going on a 2k+ mile road trip. OK sorry to bother you with personal stuff, back to the exaust:

I can take my digi camera and take some pictures, and report on the difference it made if anyone is interested.

Okay...so B&B and GHL make the header, SFR or custom for turbo-back...but what about the part after the header and before the turbo (don't know the name of it)? Mine is shot to hell and needs to be replaced. Does anyone make an aftermarket one?

See picture if you have no idea what I'm talking about

Your talking about the crossover pipe to the turbo inlet? I haven't seen one in aftermarket but I'm sure you can call or search for one at any salvage yard that has a bunch of PORSCHE parts. Ians Euro, Oklahoma Foreign, Stuttgart House of parts,,,any dismantler. Check your issue of Pano if you've got one...hang on:

dc Automotive 800-579-2410
Part Werks 1-800-366-9147
Auto Tech 1-877-445-1503
Oklhoma Foreign 1-800-462-2446
Parts Haven 1-800-767-7250

that ought to get you started.

Lindsey either just came out or is about to come out with a three piece replacement crossover pipe. I've no info on it beyond the fact that it exists on their website. www.lindseyracing.com

Ahmet,
That is so awesome! Five grand in a car that's faster than all get out. Pretty neat.

curious,
does anyone have back to back dyno info about stock vs mod exhausts, or at least some other way to quantify the gains?

What's your impression of the exhaust on the S2? Do you know if the 968 used the same exhaust as the S2? Or did Porsche improve upon it to put on the 968?

If the 968 exhaust is better, can the 968 exhaust be retrofitted to an S2? Would I really see much of an improvement?

Thanks.

Russ, I'm not intending to get more than ~320 or so at the wheels so I wouldn't call it faster than all...

However what I've always wanted to do was drive a car that I only have $5k in (but I'll admit A LOT of work), and beat something a lot more expensive/newer, and ofcourse drive the car to the track events, and go on street tires. I was hoping to include a good stereo in that budget, but I think I'm going to spend that cash on the suspension instead. I have amps, and a descent mp3 head unit, as well as a sub in the 84 944, so maybe I'll swap them if I decide to sell my 84 anytime soon, until then the factory blau. will have to do in the turbo. Oh well, at least it's got cruize and climate control for the long hauls.

Based on feedback, GHL and SFR both sound like nice kits. Is the GHL cat-back 3"? Does anyone have recommendations in the Denver/Frontrange area for custom pipe work?

Also, maybe an exhaust pro can answer -- why does the wastegate dumptube enter after instead of before the cat? I know I can have the wastegate dump to atmosphere, but would it be bad if a custom exhaust had the dump join up sooner? Does it cause undue backpressure?

Ahmat, you should take a look at Grassroots Motorsports magazine. They have an annual "2002" (depending on the year) challenge, where your car's cost including mods cannot exceed $2002. They compete in drag race, autocross, and concours. It's fun to see the various approaches to doing it on the cheap.
