Post Tire Pressures

I did a quick search of the archived posts, and didn’t find anything too conclusive, so here goes:

The owner’s manual for my S2 says that the recommended tire pressure is 36 front and 44 rear.

That seems a bit high to me, but what say you all? Do you agree/disagree with those pressures? What are you running for tire pressures, for daily driving? If you also want to add in what you use for auto-x and DE events, all the more better.

Thanks.

Jim

That's WAY too much tire pressure, I run 35 front and 30 rear, otherwise the tires wear irregularly from over/underinflation. I bump front inflation to 41 psi and rear to 38 psi for autocross.

So you run more pressure up front than the rear? The owner’s manual has it the other way around, with an eight pound difference i.e. 36 and 44.

What have you found to be the benefit of more pressure up front i.e. less understeer, more neutral etc.?

Thanks.

Like I said, the pressures I run on the street are based on the tire wear I was getting at ALL kinds of different pressures [32 all around, 36 front 29 rear, 35 all around, 40 front 35 rear, 38 front 32 rear, etc] and that's what worked best for me. I run 32 all around on the 944 and I still get slight over-inflation wear [the centers wear faster than the edges] but that's because I have a 225/50 tire on a 7" wheel...a tire that's a bit wide for a wheel tends to wear faster in the center. The street and autocross pressures I listed are for my 968. 40 front and 38 rear gives the car pretty nice oversteer for the autocross tracks I've raced on so far. 911's are the cars that run considerably more pressure in the rear, usually 32-33 front and 38 rear. Only reason I'd ever inflate to a pressure above 40 PSI is if I didn't want the edges of my tires to touch the ground, in fact I did that this week. I put my old Dunlops back onto the 968 for the drive to SoCal to avoid wearing out the Yokohamas...I've got the front inflated to 44 psi because the alignment is really aggressive and I don't want the inner edges wearing as quickly.

I like 32 front and rear because it seems like common sense.
